Parenting with skill and intention is an activity many parents don’t have the appetite, aptitude, or time for. Most of the time, it isn’t going to be fun nor enjoyable, but that’s what parents (knowingly or not) sign up for while having limited or no support system while being crunched for time and energy. Social media and screen devices make it even harder. Rough seas ahead for the next generation of kids currently being raised.

Russell acknowledges that books are “never going to compete with YouTube”, and that the pressures of parenthood in 2025 are immense. As one parent told him: “I just don’t have the energy to read to my kid. Me and my wife don’t ‘have a village’, so it’s hard to rest.” But there are ways to wean kids away from their phones. “Just scale it back a little, as much as you can at first.”

That's sad. I really enjoyed reading to my kids. They were tickled with my melodramatic reading.
