There's now a feature flag in the Nightly and Dev releases of Brave that enables vertical tabs.[1]

This can be toggled in brave://flags on version 1.45 or later. This requires restarting the browser.

It doesn't currently support nesting (hopefully coming soon?), but you can do tab groups.

I haven't tested long enough to be able to know how stable this is, but I use the Dev build and in general it is fine.

I'm not affiliated with Brave or the dev who built the feature. I'm just a happy Brave user who has been searching for get tabbed browsing for a very long time!

While not open source Vivaldi has this and similar user friendly features as well.

When I've used Vivaldi, it has had some issues keeping its ducks in a row - the visual tab list shown to the user and the internal list kept by the browser can fall out of sync, which leads to all kinds of bizarre behavior when switching tabs with the keyboard. Tab stacks are the main reason why that happens. My guess is that Vivaldi just assigns the stacked tabs a flag rather than moving them together in the browser's memory.

Nesting is unlikely to happen, since they're trying to reuse native/upstream components a lot, but they're doing work to get tab groups working well. Can't wait until the feature gets to a good state, it'll be so nice.
