Ask HN: Why is economics/finance often a trending topic, in with the tech news?

Has it always been like this? Why does HN follow Fed moves and housing market so much; why is it not more limited to salary, funding a startup, etc related to working in tech industry. Do many on HN even working in banking? Or are we all just arm chair economists after the Great Recession (I know I am!)?

I can only talk for myself. I'm an engineer, but economics is a big part of my job. I'm also working on a Master's in Econ. I don't follow the Fed that closely, but after some modern macro classes am starting to understand it all and it's becoming more interesting.

I guess that a lot of IT jobs this days are connected with fintech industry. On top of that crypto world is full of IT enthusiasts. SO I guess that audiences for IT and economics have a lot of overlaps.

Because a lot of people in IT are in it for the money, so naturally money interests them in wider context.

I guess I’m just old but when I started in 90s many people where in IT because it was cool tech, not really motivated by the money. Did that all wash away in dot.com or more recently?
