That's fine, but there better not be any future articles with headlines like "People have fled the urban core and now the city is facing a tax crisis".

If these headlines don't come, then more power to Paris.

If it succeeds (and I think it will), I hope other cities will take example on this. The rules seems reasonable: no through traffic but local traffic and deliveries permitted, and Paris has an extremely dense subway.

It won’t. I lived there for years and never owned a car. Nor did I knew someone owning a car. Obviously, car owner exits there. But a lot of car are transient from the outer core and suburbs.

And that was before uber/lyft. Relying on taxies, métro and bikeshare was already really common.

For me and my peers, car ride inside Paris was a bad idea and a chore.

I respect this, but on a personal side note I don't understand the allure of city living. There is disease, crime, increased cost, and work is not necessarily there anymore.

I spent some time in Pontevedra Spain a few years ago, a city that has to a large extent gotten rid of cars. With some minor issues mostly around commercial traffic for goods and businesses, people overwhelmingly seemed to agree that it was a success. Business was up, local stores, restaurants and so on were doing much better, people were moving to the place again, and so on.

I hope more cities in Europe start similar initiatives, we have the good fortune that our cities are older than the car.

The layout of US cities make no sense without cars.

This is a popular meme, but it can't possibly be true that (most) US cities have been founded since the automobile was invented.

I live in a northeastern US city that has streets going back to the 1600s. The oldest (continuously inhabited) city in the US was founded in the 1500s.

Here is a list that supposedly has founding dates of various cities and it looks like hundreds listed in the US are before 1885; less than a dozen after:

Sounds like the key difference is they don't want people commuting by car.
