Ask HN: Are there any simple and safe ad networks?

I'm looking to monetize one of my sites a little bit, but I hate ad networks. I don't feel right letting someone else inject JS that tracks users and slows down my site.

Are there any ad networks that are simple and easy to use? Or does it make more sense to just work with businesses directly for advertisements?
