Why not link to HN submissions instead (e.g., from your twitter account, home page, etc.) and rely on Google to rank HN submissions?

The HN front page could be obtained using something like this:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&esrch=FT1&tbo=1&tbs=qdr:d&q=site:news.ycombinator.com+%2Bhacker&aq=f

P.S. It seems that PageRank is not used in Google site queries unless they also include a keyword.

People vary in their access to external sites that can link in here. Not everyone has the same Google Page Rank on sites they control.

But I'm happy to accept your suggestion not to vote on this submission. It is an interesting idea.

P.S. You could have edited that example Google search string some more. (Maybe you will after you see this comment.)

People who have established a reputation online will have greater voting power. Why is that a bad thing?

Also, letting Google take care of ranking would make spamming difficult without constant human intervention.

Because your reputation in itself doesn't make any particular statement interesting - people with no reputation may have exceptionally good things to say and it's a lot harder to float these up the site if we're relying on Google's hidden algo as opposed to just clicking an upvote button.

I'm interested in collective assessment of the story quality rather than the selection bias created by a well-known poster. For example, Seth Godin is quite famous but what he does isn't my cup of tea; if he retweeted HN submissions his favorites might consistently float to the top, but I would probably not like them, and might start avoiding the highest-ranked stories out of fear that they appealed more to his taste than to mine.

You think that to vote on HN I should spam HN to my readers? Note: I have to post a link to HN, not the interesting link I want to vote up.

The discussion about a link on HN is often interesting. Why not link to it?

The discussion on HN is not always interesting. I do not want to direct my readers to dull discussion.

Additionally, I often want to upvote links that don't have any discussion yet --- and perhaps won't ever.

The PageRank method would basically mean that I don't get to vote on submissions. I detest twitter, and I don't have my own blog -- neither of which prevents me from upvoting stories based on the HN guidelines (at the moment).

I just don't see how the linking power of the submitter should have anything to do with their voting power on this site. With your algorithm, the webmaster of a popular celebrity gossip site would have vastly more voting power than I would. Is that what you want?
