That 65.8% seems high to me using benchmarks of UC and Stuyvesant, but it is true Asians would be “grossly over represented” at top schools if not for affirmative action. Thus the current push to enforce affirmative action on the UC system. Turns out minorities are only minorities if they underperform.

Ah weird. I was on some AWS page that said the cost was $0.01/gB, which threw me off as seeking ridiculous compared to what I remembered. Not sure what page it was, but clearly that is not the actual pricing.

Interestingly, Troy says that egress is expensive on Azure at $0.014 AUD/gB (~$0.010 USD/gB), but that is the same price as additional egress for Linode and DO, and Linode egress has never struck me as expensive. In fact, I’m kind of shocked (as an AWS user) that Azure egress is the same price as Linode.

Actually, wow it seems AWS is also the same price as Linode and DO for egress. While Linodes and DO do come with decent free bandwidth, this is a surprise to me.

This, I think, is a general result of trials/evidence-based medicine in combination with the combinatorics of the human body in combination with decentralized, unsearchable, overly-privatized health data.

Not necessarily I think. As I understand, Hawkins envisions motor skills as involving a kind of “system call” to the old brain, and the fact that the cortical columns are more efficient does not seem to necessarily imply that old brain structures are similarly more efficient. So, I’m not sure there would have to be a clear correlation between professional sports and general intelligence.

I wasn’t aware of this. Wouldn’t the Jensen Box imply a correlation between intelligence and simple reaction time, which seems to be a contentious point?

I’m also reminded of the lack of correlation between the Wonderlic Test and NFL performance, although perhaps that speaks more about the test than it does about any correlation with intelligence.

I don’t know if Jeff Hawkins would agree, but it seems to me that if his ideas involving cortical columns are true, intelligence is indeed capable of being compressed to a single number with statistical significance, due to underlying efficiency differences in the base components which are replicated across the whole neocortex.

I don’t know the details of the Delta conspiracy theory, but the evolution of Delta looks abundantly natural, so whatever that theory is, seems unlikely.

This statement does not declare that Delta’s origins were a lab leak, since late 2021 is a year after Delta was first detected in late 2020. Can’t have your origins in the future until time travel is invented.

Seems therefore more proper to interpret the statement exactly as written rather than add additional conspiratorial inferences.

Seems so in my reading. I assume I must be incorrect though, since that interpretation seems absurd. Yet, not sure how else to interpret it… but I guess this isn’t much different from the master/slave stuff in code, or the removal of the master branch default in git.

Learning disabilities do exist. But wrt a 6th grade reading level, it would be shocking if learning disabilities were anything less than a severe minority of the cause. That’s not to say, however, that improper teaching in response to learning disabilities are necessarily a minority of the cause, just that the disabilities cannot possibly be so severe that we should accept this outcome.

We’re talking about learning basic stuff, not top tier postgrad stuff. The article is about the majority of American adults being unable to read prose at a sixth grade level - that is, years before SF suggests teaching algebra.

That is absolutely a massively distributed pedagogical failure of outstanding degree. Unless the average adult is so mentally disabled that acceptable-or-above teaching should result in this outcome.

I have an Aeron, Embody, and Gesture. Yet, some of the $300-$400 mesh chairs at Staples feel better. Downside is I’ve never had one of those chairs last longer than 2-3 years before the mesh loosened up more than I’d like, but while they are good they are the best I’ve tried.

I wasn’t aware some AMOLED phones use dc dimming. I would love to have that. It’s so weird looking at your phone and seeing the screen turn on and off repeatedly.
