There are certainly varying degrees of baseline consciousness.

I think you can pull many people out of their patterns into consciousness for a short time through the right engagement, but they'll just slip back into semi-oblivion when they go back to their daily life, social network, confirmation bias affirming news sources, etc...

China is the largest paper consumer in the world (100mm metric tons), followed not far behind by the US(70mm metric tons). Japan is 3rd at 25mm.. That seems to suggest we have a lot of room for reduction.

If by the bright side you mean you would only make it there it there as pure energy. Mass is converted to energy as it approaches C (Light Speed). Though getting mass to actual light speed would require infinite energy, so that point is moot.

Let's say you get to 96% C. You would experience 28% of the journey. Taking into account the the time to speed up and slow down from C, you're looking at over 290k years from the perspective of the passengers.

At 99% C, you would experience over 14% of the journey (About 142k years).

I just replaced all the lighting in my House a few months back with Hyperikon LED lighting, and really felt like it was an improvement over the previous CFL lighting.

Since this would be over the poles, agriculture would not be impacted. There would likely be a substantial impact to ecology of these regions, depending on size of the shade of course.

This really has been a common theme through mythology though. One needs to look no further than Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son on god's word. So the experiment came down to experiencing a "Feeling of Presence" when a robot arm you are controlling touches your back out of sync. That almost feels expected, something is touching you and you didn't initiate it at that moment.

Would it have been a better solution? Probably, but the investment required (laying down the rails, land buyouts, copious use of emanate domain, political greasing of the wheels, etc...) has always been prohibitive. The gains would be shared between many disparate groups that would need to fund this together, taking years to decades for any ROI - certainly a longer time-frame than most publicly traded, quarterly measured, corporations can afford. At the least this would have required some government subsidization.

With driver-less tech around the corner, returns on this investment for any one company become even more dubious, and thus make it less likely to happen. I think the parent comment here will always get some up-votes, but that is as far as I see this going anymore. Maybe it'd go farther if we threw in words like 'Hyperloop' ;)

Well Ceres only has a diameter of 589mi (a little over 1/4 the size of our moon). It might be a good launchpad for refueling though, given the near in-significant gravity and apparently plentiful water.

I love the idea colonizing our sister planet Venus. Nearly identical in size and composition to Earth - but so volatile. Mining resources would there would be practically impossible due to the pressure on the surface, never mind the cataclysmic surface turn-over events. On top of that, due to the lack of a magnetosphere, solar winds often react directly with Venus' upper atmosphere...

On Mars we might be able to build large stables domes, or close off caverns for additional radiation shielding. We could mine the planet itself for resources, and even grow crops there.

If SpaceX Succeeds at this, we're going to have to update that term...

Really, this is an incredible assertion that goes against all recent research results, and therefore requires sunbstantial evidence or citation thereof. I believe his source would be the author John McDougall, who is pretty much the only person you can find pushing this... 'Hypothesis' might be a strong word. McDougall goes as far as to say Sugar is less fattening thank Olive oil. The reason he is so anti-fat looks to be a strong support for movement toward a Vegan diet. Spreading misinformation such as this is a huge diservice to vegans though, and would likely only lead to higher instances of obesity and metabolic diseases for anyone unfortunate enough to buy into it.

Windows 7 met a much better response from the market, and at least the last time I checked(August) was still selling faster than windows 8! The entire windows 8 release has felt forced and unnatural. Personally I still cannot get used to the awkward interface that can't decide whether it wants to be a tablet or desktop OS. This is a poor decision on Microsoft's part.

Depends on your definition of economic success. If you define it as the ability to distribute resources necessary for survival, and extend that to the species, then interplanetary travel is the only eventuality that makes economic sense.
