Children used to work because they had to in order to survive. The choices were work or starve to death. Taking away the option to work obviously makes them worse off. This plays out today when western countries force labor laws in countries like Bangladesh. When the children can no longer work in factories they often have to resort to prostitution.

The question of labor unions is a different issue. Labor unions do benefit their members who do get raises because of their actions. They do not benefit the people who will no longer get hired because the cost of labor is now higher. They do not benefit workers in other industries because the prices they will pay will be higher and displaced workers will enter their industry lowering their wages. Labor unions harm society at large in order to benefit their memebers.

Trademark law is to prevent "damage" to brands, not protect customers. If a system was in place to protect the customers, it would be the customers who were deceived that sue and receive compensation, not the company owning the trademark.

HTTPS Everywhere works based on rules as to which sites support https. It does not blindly redirect every request to port 443.

Clearly the drivers are paid enough to be willing to do it.

I think that being well lit will help to deter intruders.

Austerity is effective when it is achieved by cutting spending. The cases where it hasn't worked were because the spending cuts were accompanied with tax increases [1]. This shouldn't be a surprise because tax increases tend to decrease GDP [2].

IME, people trust individuals more than institutions. So, their level of trust for the news organization doesn't really matter if they trust the specific journalist.

While I agree that the US prison system has many issues, recidivism rates can't really be compared between countries because of differences in time frames and rearrest vs re-conviction.

You shouldn't be running outdated software on an internet connected device. I don't think any company updates their Android phones for that long. Samsung supports their devices for 3 years. Google might be a bit longer for the Pixel devices but they did drop their old Nexus line quicker. This isn't to say that the hardware needs to be given up on. If you want to use a community developed custom ROM like LineageOS then you can use a device longer.

I don't think any high end devices have user replaceable batteries and the battery is likely to be very degraded after 6 years of use.

The article mentions that iOS 13.2 fixes the issue. If an iOS update can fix it, then I think it would just be software.

Worth noting that the SE has a 4.0" screen so that is 0.7" larger.

In order to be included in Firefox, they needed to agree to the DOH-resolver policy[1]. That states that:

We intend to publicly document violations of this Policy and take additional actions if necessary.

I believe that those "additional actions" will prevent providers from violating the policy. If not, they will be removed from Firefox.
