They have recently made a lot of noise about incompatible Android derived OS in China.

Like the Alibaba OS Aliyun. The name election is interesting. Yun is mandarin for cloud, which according to the news it is a main feature of this android bastard child, saving your data to the cloud like iCloud for iOS

Just my two cents

Interesting enough not only the EBS is down, but ELB can not register instances even if there are not EBS based and completely operational.

I have some live instances running without EBS disks that I can not place behind the ELB as it is not working.

I have taken a look to your free and paid applications and they are promising. In fact, you seem to be doing quite a number of sales of your "Social Media Ticker" application. It seems that you are lacking behind in free applications. I can give you some free advice based on my own experience developing applications for the android market.

First, I see you have published one free app a wednesday, and another a saturday. In my experience free applications launched friday night have better exposure than midweek. It can deepen on the application, but usually when I launch or update a friday night I get better results all the weekend than launching any other day. It might be the case that there are less applications in the new category to compete, my theory, most updates happen in working days.

Secondly, there is no way of knowing what the users want in advance. It seems they are not interested in saving pictures to the SD card or settings a screenshot as a wallpaper. I believe your abstract photo painter is a fun application with bad marketing. You can benefit from a name with more grab. It could even be doing too much: too many effects, too powerful. You could potentially advertise just one effect like "warhol-ize your friends", but make it easy. Social might help you: share your patenting on Facebook. Tweet it. whatever… at least, change the icon. A smiling female showing your effect can be a good idea. Even the "mona lisa". But your current icon looks awful.

About Android market SEO. You have long descriptions describing what your application does, which is good. Try to check if there is keywords related to your product on mobile search. This could increase your installs. A good starting point is the adwords keyword tool. You can set the results to only mobile. And don't use generic words on the name of the application unless you are king of the hill. Users searching for wallpapers are not going to notice your "Wallpaper Share" among the ton of results.

Absolutely yes, and how it does depends on the type of noise.

I read something similar on reddit/r/askscience time ago, referred to studying with music. Programming and studying are different activities that will probably activate different areas of the brain, but they are both very demanding and I believe similar enough for the comments on that thread to apply here.

The fact is that when listening to vocal music the brain needs to do "decoding", no matter if you like the music or not. Apparently, it only happens with vocal music. This takes a dent of your brain "processing power" and study worse than the control group.

I believe something similar might be happening when programming. If you are not 100% in the task because your brain is busy working on useless data, it is going to affect the results.

I develops applications for a living on both android and iOS, and as a developer, each one has its quirks.

Iphone apps tend to be more robust. The objc language has some interesting features like being able to signal a nil (the objc null). You can chain operations without having to care about fails in the middle, and check the final result for nil. This is the equivalent, saving the distance, to the java null pointer assignments, which is perhaps one of the most common errors.

The tricky issue about objetiveC and iphone is memory usage. Memory that is not correctly managed, like free twice, it is going to fail crashing the app (the EXC_BAD_ACCESS error). Getting this right takes a considerable amount of time and effort. Tools to make this easier are the SDK memory monitor, static code analyzers like clang, or the automatic reference counting (ARC) which lets the compile handle release and retain operations for you.

I believe he might be talking about modifying a view, as he presents the example of adding an email button or a facebook one.

It still doesn't make sense as you can use tools such as Interface Builder. The only thing that applies, you could still be building the view programmatically or need custom animations. That needs coding. And of course a facebook button needs to handle things such as authentication than an emailing one does not.

About the UITabBar, you can always use the black one. Or use this little trick for greater effect which is less demanding on custom images: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/571028/changing-tint-back...

I also do apps for a living and it is true that business has unreasonable expectations on time and cost. Not to speak of the myriad of people that want a whatsapp clone for 500$

I work as a freelancer making android and iOs apps, and already I am having clients that prefer launching on android first and later iphone.

Mostly it is because they believe their potential customers are more likely to have android devices, as android phones are cheaper and ubiquitous. Some of them believe competition is tougher in the app market, although I don't necessarily agree.

I wonder if this IR35 issue also extends to other european citizens working as freelancers. I know nothing on UK law, but common sense dictates it does not forbid hiring other europeans.

It might be possible to hire remote freelancers based on other european startup hubs without being affected by IR35.

Yahoo has a very similar service called Yahoo YQL. It can parse any web resource like HTML or XML and is conceniently available in JSONP format to bypass browser cross domain limitations. It supports parsing the data in server side javascript.

Working in Spain, I know of some companies which outsource to Chile's neighbor Argentina, where labor wages are comparatively cheaper.

I think this will get more common in the future, and in time more and more companies in Spain ill be hiring labor in Southamerica, as the english speaking companies are doing with India.

Considering the poor incentives Spain is giving to entrepreneurship, I can only hope my own country will look at chile's example and help our punished IT industry.

You can also install a honeypot. Some text links that your human visitors don't see but that bots do, and that way trap malicious bots which do not respect your robots.txt file.

There is an outgoing project: Project HoneyPot, which uses honeypots installed among their members to detect bots to build a database of malicious bots which can be consulted by their API or their plugins. They even report if there is evidence of Spam being sent as a consucuence of the bot visit.

They have plugins for wordpress among others.

The article mentions Apple as it had made the iphone and the app store out of thin air. It mentions nokia, motorola and the other manufacturers as being unable to create such a innovative product like the iphone. It is not true.

It is a pity Palm shooted itself after successful devices like Palm Pilot or Tungsten. Palm could have made the iphone. It had extensive experience in touch screen devices. It had previous endeavors in phone-pda hybrids like the Treo.

Palm could have made the jump, if only they haven't split in palm one and palm source and keep the good work on.

And the same story happens with Amazon Kindle and similar devices. I have been reading ebooks in Palm (thanks to plucker, great open source reader) for ages before ebook readers even existed.
