They are there because they have insight into a phenomenon they have studied and is being discussed, and they may have a book or something that further explains what they are talking about should the listener be interested. Should they not mention or promote their work?

There's a difference between having Asperger's and being an asshole.

Do you also sit through commercials on tv?, or read the advertisements on the paper/magazines? How do you feel about pop-ups? All of those will have good production values and help pay the bills.

There are a couple of people that might do something interesting or funny with their sponsored segments, but plenty are just "hey guys, let me tell you about this toothbrush".

I was not bothered by the interjections in the Planet Money story, but I am by the ones in RadioLab. I think it´s because in PM it sounds like friendly banter, but in RL every interruption is like it´s made to be thought of as a [pause for dramatic effect] revelation.

They do, they're just entry level, basic everything, fancy nothing. You get from A to B and that's pretty much it. Some may lack even a radio or a/c.

That only works if they already know you. If you wanna start something new, it might benefit from having the outreach that facebook has.

This is totally anecdotal but to me it seems like the stick keeps me more engaged with what's happening with the car so I find I tend to be less distracted.

I would say your analogy applies, but in a different way: walmart and home depot arrived and mom&pop hardware and general stores didn't all disappear, but their numbers did diminish. Where 8 minimarkets were open, half may have closed (YMMV).
