If you wish to test them, please setup a pirate radio station and you will be arrested. The sentencing is not pretty, so tread lightly.

This is a bad assumption that any new competition would act differently than the status quo. More competitors would make it harder to have a solid argument of "pay me, or else", but that wouldn't stop some behind-the-scenes collusion.

I know this is naive as hell, but would adding some random sleeps before returning encrypted bits make it better or worse for this particular attack?

Think about the absurdity of being sued for patent infringement if you were a pizza shop and your oven allegedly infringed on a troll patent. You didn't manufacturer the oven, why are you being sued?

The vendor's reputation is irreparably damaged by patent trolls who prey on customers due to the patent's apparent weakness. Sometimes corporations need justice too.
