The C64 had one byte at $D010 -- 8 bits, one for each sprite -- that, when set, would add an offset to that sprite's X position, moving it beyond the 256 limit. This would allow the contents of each sprite's X position register to reset at 0, staying within the 8-bit limit.

Stop. Please. Obesity and diabetes are not the eighth and ninth deadly sins. Nobody wakes up in the morning as you so assert and chooses to gain weight, become insulin resistant, or have their pancreas fail.
Further, your uninformed opinion excludes people like myself who are thin but diabetic (type 2). It also excludes people who have LADA 1.5.
I guess because anyone who has diabetes is morally bankrupt they shouldn't expect any help. Is that right?
In most corporations (at those I've been involved with), the people who actually get the work done very rarely advance.
Your career is not the work you do. It's how you're perceived socially within a company structure.
This essay is actually very good: http://www.ribbonfarm.com/the-gervais-principle/
My personal experience is that those who are highly skilled and add value become an immediate threat to those who are just "punching a clock". It's important to note that those people may be at any level of an organization.
This piece really struck a nerve. I am a cynic; I think it impedes my ability to do all that I could.
The trouble is this: I don't know how to not be a cynic.
I've never enjoyed exercise. As a young child I would feel horrible after physical exertion. For years I heard things like: grow up, grow a pair, get used to it, you just need to toughen up, and so on.
In my early teen years I ran long distance track but never felt well during or after a meet. I had to stop.
Fast forward to my late 30s and I get diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (obstructive) [1]. It's genetic (I've been tested). At this point, even mild exercise over a period of time (a week or so) leads to congestive heart failure (CHF). I have little doubt I was suffering from lighter symptoms as far back as childhood.
There are some people who cannot exercise. I so want to do something to help ease stress. For me, however, exercise == stress. If I lifted weights two days a week and ran for three, I'd end up in the hospital. As it is, I can walk a few times a week for about 30 minutes.
There are zebras in the world. People should be careful about taking advice from discussion boards. See your doctor before starting any serious exercise program.

It's no coincidence that the modern Western diet is based on carbohydrates and hydrogenated oils. While an individual can choose to eat a high fat, low carbohydrate diet, our entire society cannot. This is a problem of scale.
Our politicians made a deal with the agri-business devil to ensure (most) everyone is fed relatively cheaply. The toll for this deal is that some people end up fat and sick. I'm convinced this is known and understood; nothing will be done about it.
It's left to the individual to adjust their lifestyle to suit their biology.
