There’s millions of apps to choose from on your phone

And choosing one of them obviously makes life more complicated than not doing that.

getting your ass profiled

Gmail knows nothing of my ass.

let me know if the ads in your mailbox are helpfully tailored to your needs and preferences!

I couldn't, for I don't check them. I have enough life to live without degoogling crusade.

Yup, it is often mind-boggling how people here are detached from reality. Millions of people around the world rely on Google services, Gemini in all probability is the most used model consumer-wise, Google receives unimaginable stream of data on even smallest habits common people have etc.

But hey, Gemini makes shittier job than Fable at producing my shitty "app" no one cares about. It is so over for Google!

But why people choose to bring the mediocrity of Google into their lives is beyond me.

Because life gets simpler and better if you are just using what is available on your phone and in your browser instead of constantly chasing current HN darling.

but to consider "pixels on screens that you disagree with" to be worse than actual mass killing is maybe a tad hyperbolic here

And who considers this?

I never wrote that world with war but without business would be overall better than world without war but with people profiting from ad business. I merely pointed out that war can bring out the best from people - mercy, valor, honor, sacrifice, selflessness. Business cannot, as it is about commodification and profit.

"Don't hate the player, hate the game"

I believe lack of social ostracization is one of the reason we find ourselves in current state. Because players are what perpetuates the game.

And where the acceleration comes in in such description?

Improving one's immediate circumstances in such context is talking to someone and asking for help, not spending days installing latest set of tools endorsed by privacy advocates and bricking one's phone due to accident while flashing privacy-friendly ROM.

Silicon Valley and Wall Street are cancer that should be cleansed with fire. If western societies couldn't lit the fire themselves, it is up to the Chinese dragon to burn it.

I have more meaningful intellectual conversations with LLMs in a given day than in a month on social networks.

If by "social networks" you mean platforms like X, Reddit or HN, then sure, but bar is pretty low there.

But let's not forget that both technologies mainly isolate and alienate you from real world and real people. The fact that the more recent one doesn't suck as much yet is not very comforting.

Most of the people responding are probably those with a strong opinion because of what they work on

Quite the opposite. People here have strong opinion because they work on web apps and CLI toys.

"I personally love social media because it brings different cultures together"

It doesn't bring people of different cultures together - it removes different cultures, and pumps people full of goo produced by culture industry.

Family, surely not. I hope so

School, workplace, sports club, but yes, family as well.

Children learn how to influence their parents to get what the want, which parent they should put pressure on, which parent should be first to be told about some issue etc.

We don't call it politics as it is just a natural thing, but the principle is the same.

actually at the places where 80% of engineers call that shit out that political manager probably gets booted from the company.

Congrats, you will soon discover that politics is about realizing your goals by influencing other people and their decisions. And it is easier when you end up in the group that share your set of values.

It is funny. Well-socialized person doesn't need this kind of guide, as unwritten rules of social play are learned in the process of growing-up.

But it is clear for "nerds" and "hackers" social is impenetrable, thus preference for interacting with the machine and towards techno-solutionism. What, by the way, the main reason FOSS movement will never liberate anything.

Average go, rust, c++ and c will outperform amazing java programs

Everyone that has a minimal experience with these knows it is not true.

While performance ceiling is likely higher in C/C++/Rust (but not Go), when we move beyond microbenchmarks Java provides competitive performance with much better ergonomics. Not to mention strictly superior tooling.

Increases in labor productivity is a curious thing to think about. Do I deserve more wages for using AutoCad instead of drafting paper?

Please...

But it's also true that in spite of this, my output is higher. Should I capture the increased output or should the innovators of the tools? What about the firms that invest in procuring these tools and production technology? Should the customers capture the increased output through lower prices? Or should the innovators, firms, and customers all get less, and instead my wages should get bigger?

No, only your boss deserves to gain from you productivity increase, that's obvious.
