Interesting link, particularly the part about ways law enforcement might try to shut down SR. One approach police might take is to set up shop as sellers, and then instead of running a scam, actually ship the illicit goods and have the police show up right after the mailman. If I understand correctly, the buyer's address must go to the seller instead of the SR admins.

This might be considered entrapment, but if the buyer seeks out SR themselves and gets unlucky in their choice of seller, entrapment might be hard to argue.

That depends on vesting. You own whatever portion of the 35% that has vested based on your contract and have legal rights to it, although your contract could have repurchase clauses that allow the company to buy back shares at a price you may not like. Vesting clauses are common for cofounders as well as employees, and this is usually a good thing to avoid the possibility of a cofounder working for a couple of months and then leaving with full ownership.

I think it depends on the size of company that ZP wants to target. I did a payroll processor evaluation for my startup 2 years ago and the upfront pricing and lighter (less time consuming) sales process that surepayroll offered compared to paychex and ADP was one reason we chose surepayroll over those companies.

Surepayroll also offered much better online tools and better pricing than either Paychex or ADP at the time. Now that Paychex has acquired Surepayroll it's good to see another online friendly option being built. Now if somebody would just build an online friendly way of managing 401Ks for small businesses.

I'm curious how you vet the first group, e.g. that someone works for Zynga. Verifying a corporate email address seems like the easy way, but I would imagine many current employees would be reluctant to use their work email to interact with a recruiting service.

In his case, it was a combination of frugality, a decent paying job, and good investing, esp. in real estate (note the "Eventually both rentals were sold and the gains were put elsewhere.") in the "Brief History of the Stash" article. Having gains on real estate probably means he sold them pre-crash.

I'm a fan of the MMM blog because it describes an attainable alternative lifestyle for talented people who aren't already wealthy. It may not be a lifestyle that many people want, but at least it's a change from the high college debt, two income trap, expensive city lifestyle that seems to be the norm for lots of young families.

I don't aspire to live on 20K per year, but thinking about how lowering your personal "burn rate" can give you more freedom in your life is a great mental exercise.

True, but the other side of the coin is that investments can exit at much higher value in a bubble environment.

He should buy the New York Times too, and make their articles free to logged in Facebook users. That would bring me back to Facebook more than instagram will (nothing against instagram - it's a great app).

This article is spot on advice for most startups. At an early stage, you really want as much feedback as possible, and if you're fortunate enough to become overwhelmed with responses, you can start automating how you handle them or splitting the responses into classes that you treat differently.

I don't think there is an effective way to hide the use of affiliate links, so they may as well disclose it in their FAQ or TOS just to avoid complaints that they're not being genuine towards their users.

I think it's smart to have it disclosed somewhere (FAQ) because people that know what affiliate links look like can figure it out themselves anyway by looking at the links.
