i always enjoy the in person experience at B&N

they need to get a better distro -> store pipeline

and they need amazon-like lockers in their store to order online and pickup in store 24/7

i'd never use amazon again!!

You only need 1 true fan if it's the right fan!

There was a (uploaded to TikTok) video I saw where this guy had 18 followers on YouTube, and just was not getting any kind of traction at all. I mean some traction but not much -- only 18 followers! Was about to quit. Then all of a sudden he got contacted by Oprah Winfrey's people about hosting a TV show about the ideas that he talked about in his videos.

It turns out that one of the 18 followers he had on YouTube was Oprah Winfrey's hair stylist, and Oprah was talking to her about this project she was trying to get started, and the stylist mentioned this one YouTube account she loved who was all about that topic, and the rest is history.

Every single person who watches your video is a unique human individual, and magic can happen from just one spark, from just one person!

the PROPORTION of content is getting worse

but GREAT content on an absolute numbers level is rising every single year

excepting the death of good content through attrition and entropy good content only goes up unless we're all dead

it's just discovering good new content is difficult, especially when you're a sclerotic barnacle tied to legacy interests of all stripes!

If a search engine cannot recognize what content is good and which is bad, it's not a good search engine.

If there was a sea of garbage with some beautiful healthy fish still in it, it doesn't mean I'm going to start catching garbage and passing it off as halibut.

But the model of constant growth required and advertising to cross purposes of your users means that they're selling garbage by the pound and calling it fish!

I have no interest in agreeing that the emperor's new clothes exist.

By reading and writing

Read "bad quality" works too. And know that you're going to write a lot of "bad quality" works too, before people to start to get what you're trying to say.

Start with small talk! It's so valuable in establishing a baseline of "we're two humans in the same condition at heart, and the first thing I'm offering is a universally shared experience, and not talking crazy to you or starting a fight (physical or political or otherwise)"

A lot of people think it's just useless filler but it actually is so important and a valuable tool when meeting people!

Talk about the weather! I'm serious! And drop any kind of internal pretension about being too good for such an inane topic (if that applies to you). Embrace it as if you're meeting someone from a distant tribe, and you are both wary of each other, and you want to start things off on a good foot. Talking about things you know you both deal with and think about is literally perfect!

Dr. Chris Palmer: Diet & Nutrition for Mental Health | Huberman Lab Podcast #99

My guest this episode is Chris Palmer, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He explains the important connection between nutrition, metabolism and mental health and his pioneering work using the ketogenic diet to successfully treat patients with various mental illnesses, including depression and schizophrenia. Dr. Palmer explains how the ketogenic diet is an evidenced-based treatment for epilepsy, mimics the fasted state and can offset the cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s. He describes the key roles of mitochondria in mental health, how certain conditions likely arise from mitochondrial dysfunction, and how low-carbohydrate diets increase mitochondrial turnover to improve mental health. He also explains how low-carbohydrate diets positively impact the gut microbiome and weight loss, important risk factors for mitochondrial health such as marijuana and alcohol, and the best way to increase circulating ketones depending on individual needs. We also cover how a ketogenic diet impacts mood, sleep, and fertility. Dr. Palmer’s work stands as a revolutionary approach to mental health and disease that, given the prevalence of mental health challenges, should be of interest to people of all backgrounds and ages.

they do chime in and tell you all sorts of things "by the way, i can also play music while you're getting ready for bed" while i'm trying to concentrate and live my life lol.

just compile a list of all commands into an email and send that to me. i don't actually want to hear you talk, siri

Apple Rankings 4 years ago

I fucking love science!!

Sorry, I just hate the world we’ve built. I would so much rather live in a world where my apples are not poison but only are around during the fall.

But, capital return requirements and the remorseless scythe of competition exist, so instead we get poison apples available year round.

You didn’t use the word incorrectly. They are just an asshole.

“Guys” as a collective noun has no sex/gender. It’s as gendered as “y’all”. Words can have different meanings.

Fuck those people.

This was so obvious it should have been the null hypothesis.

I don’t mean to be glib, but the limitations of science as it’s practiced can lead to less than effective solutions.

For instance, why do we require double blind studies as the only way to “know” something scientifically? Parachutes have never been proven to be effective in a double blind study, after all.

Intuition can be invaluable for protecting us from dangers we can’t prove rationally, or at least can’t prove rationally right now.

It’s not always right, but neither is science. Except we live in a society where science is privileged over every other “way of knowing”. Sure, science updates false beliefs to reality over time, but until it does, people will be using “The Science” to call those people conspiracy theorists spreading misinformation.

I think we as a society need to take a step back and question many bedrock assumptions underpinning our world and examine if they’re really serving us.

Yes! One thing that I found really neat was that there's a series of underground walkways between buildings on the campus, which is very nice because it gets cold in Rochester. The campus is also just very beautiful too. You're most likely going through something difficult if you find yourself there, and it feels special and nice rather than the experience of most hospitals where you can sometimes feel like a number contributing to their budget.
