Nice to see more Sysadmin type person such as myself out there! You seem to have great programming languages to back it up too. But I definitely miss the days when Linux Engineer was more of a main job. I've transitioned to Devops, but I definitely miss being more focused on scaling performance on bare metal, or VM's rather than moving everything to the cloud and everything being containers.

I almost took a job at NASA Ames with a veterans org that would have worked on a lot of the lander stuff. My career has done well, but I kinda regret not pursuing that further.Good luck going forward, don't have any work just wanted to say something when I saw a similar resume.

I'm pretty sure that's why some user marking themselves as 3 strawberry emojis accomplished a 3333333.33% success rate.

Do you really think a useful bash script using ChatGPT prompts is worth blogging about? I'm genuinely asking. I've been wanting to start my blog back up I was always primarily a sysadmin, although I've had to move more into DevOps to keep with the times and instead of being more an SRE/sysadmin like I used to be I'm now DevOps meets sysadmin where I'm not helping write our companies application but I do everything else from CI/CD, monitoring, log dashboards, to creation of infrastructure using terraform, ansible etc.

So I don't want you to think my question was being sarcastic... I'm genuinely curious if you think this sort of thing would be a useful or interesting thing to blog about or only in the cases of a resume building thing?

I would like to live in the same world you do where that's believable.

Baseball has been getting crazier and crazier in the last few years with umpires trying harder and harder to make the show about them. It's even more mind boggling to me that they're doing this when they're actively trying out tech to displace them. But their union is way too strong and it's going to be the downfall of them. The union needs to stop protecting 100% of the members and let the bad ones fall to the way side otherwise they're going to destroy the rest of them.

Unions are extremely important and deserve a place in our society. But unions that do not police their own... just like our own police need to be done away with.

Seriously... Too many people just buy the excuses of these systems even though there are massively distributed systems that work on existing technology quite well. Crypto is just an excuse to scam others with the promise of $$ rewards using words they don't understand and seeming to be high tech.

Exactly this... There are numerous stories of people having their boss call them and ask them about something they're doing that they would only know if watching on video. Apparently this was somewhat common as remote work became common among during COVID where women employees would have their boss spy on them remotely via video and they would realize it because the boss would say some offhanded comment that they wouldn't have known if they weren't watching through the webcam.

I do not use my work computer for much outside of work... However, when traveling for work or other times I will 100% do personal things on my computer. Even though I'm devops/sysadmin and had admin rights to disable applications from accessing my macbooks webcam I knew they could override it at anytime they wanted. So I also purchased covers for the webcam & never trusted that I wasn't being spied on via microphone. But any company that does that stuff is just terrible and it's not the way to get the best out of your employees. I am much more likely to put in a lot of extra time outside of work if I can mix in my personal browsing with my work.

It's not more risky for decent people. Just the people who can't stop being perverts & sexually harassing people while drunk actually get held accountable rather than it being swept under the rug. For those of us who don't participate in such behavior nothing has changed or become any more risky.

People getting loose at parties used to mean harassment and it was deemed ok because "men are being men" but it was never ok. Just treat people as they deserve whether you're drinking or not and there's no issue to be had.

We do like a few of the changes they're making such as selling more stuff online so the average person can buy on release day rather than having to pay double to scalpers. But overall, fanatics is not viewed positively by anyone I know. Especially those who have been unfortunate enough to buy their sports merch as it's not done well.

I read his book when I was younger... And at DEFCON 19 I got selected to get paired with a celebrity hacker in the 10,000 cent hacker pyramid. I ended up getting paired with Kevin Mitnick & we played against Dan Kaminsky. It was a really cool experience & even though Kaminsky went on to win... It was a ton of fun and Kevin was a really cool guy.

I switched about a year ago as well, partially because of performance pains but also because I tried to leave as many google products behind as I could for privacy reasons. I have not been disappointed so far... There are a few plugins I miss on Chrome but nothing I couldn't live without or find an acceptable alternative.

yeah... The company I was originally with before we got bought was highly tech so they understood all that. However, this other company that we were bought by they have no tech experience and they hate paying tech salaries. However, dealing with their IT & other people is insanely frustrating and doesn't foster a good development environment.

The thing is with our tech is we have contracts for clinical studies that run years out. So they can't just kill our products and some of our stuff runs on REALLY old technology and definitely not something their IT people know how to handle. So i'm actually curious to see how this goes for them and I wonder if they won't try to bring me back as my group has always been a slightly special/weird group when it comes to what is needed for support.

I'm on the tech side of it so I can't fully speak to the labs. But some of the lab people I do work with since before we got acquired with this company have received emails saying they could receive a 1k bonus for helping find people for certain positions that exactly match theirs lol.

So the company is trying to solicit the very people they're replacing to help them find their own replacements.

155k, Linux/DevOps/SecOps. I work about 40 hours a week full remote.

However, I just found out I'm getting laid off in october as they're moving services overseas to cut costs. I work for the largest Clinical research org in the world & we were bought by them last year. I'm a bit surprised & the group that bought us was not known for tech. I think they're going to ruin a lot of their tech offerings because I've worked a lot with their Systems/Devops people over the last couple years and they are extremely unimpressive.

As for experience... I technically started at age 17 in the military doing tactical communications via satellite, networking, servers, radios etc. But been working in private sector for about 12-13 years after going to school for about 2 years upon getting out.

Well written article... I know the US has definitely provoked and instigated its fair share of wars. But it has honestly surprised me how conservatives have jumped on the side of Russia which was their favorite scare tactic in the past. It's incredible the power a single charismatic person can have on the psyche of a nation.
