I went to a high school 1974-80 that was close to the University of Waterloo in Ontario Canada. Even then they were a big computer school.
Through my high school, I had access to the UW computer resources.

I don't own a Tesla yet but I will shortly. I now have a Subaru with EyeSight so I am accustomed to some extensive driver assistance. Especially on the highway but you still need to pay attention.
I do a lot of business travel and have rented multiple Tecla's, a Chevy Bolt (no assist), and a Polestar (limited assist). The Tesla driver assist is outstanding but is still only assistance. It is not fully driving the car for you and you need to identify and pay close attention in more complex situations.
You are not technically fired. At the company I worked for, you are immediately walked to the door and you will not be able do any more work for the company. You will get your two weeks pay.

I have done work on a power system for a data center in a previous life.
It is not easy to shut power off in a data center. They are designed that way intentionally. Yes, it is fairly easy to shut down utility power. But then you have automatic diesel generators that will start. If you shut them down, then you have battery powered UPS units.
In the building that I knew well in Canada, they had a well guarded and covered button behind the security desk that was labeled 'EPO': Emergency Power Off.
This button would send a signal to all systems (utility switches, diesel generator, and UPS units) to immediately shutdown or don't even start (diesels).
Apparently buying a Standard Range+ Model 3 for $39k is next to impossible.

Think of it this way. When you start a company, you invest $100. For the company accounting, that is $100 in the bank account/asset and $100 in equity. $100 - 0 - $100 = 0
Now you take a loan for $100. Now you have $200 in the bank account, a $100 liability, and $100 in equity. $200 - $100 - $100 = $0.

No. At one time over 10 years ago, I had a dedicated server with one of the hosting companies. They charged me $225/month.
I moved to AWS and my cost dropped to ~$30/month. Even now, 10 years later, my total AWS bill for primarily EC2 and RDS services that runs an application that pays my bills is ~$75 per month.
If my company suddenly went viral and had a bunch of new customers, I could scale up instantly.
That is all true but then you need to pay for the services and equipment as well as have the expertise on staff to configure and manage the equipment.
As far as reliability, you can't compare almost any COLO location with an AWS data center.
I agree but now the cost climbs. I am not saying AWS is cheap. Just that you need to look at all the services and components that support a server in a rack.
It's not just the server cost that matters when you compare the cloud to a bare-metal server.
What about:
Networking equipment
Backup power - UPS and generators
Internet backbone - Speed as well as reliability
Cooling and other infrastructure costs
Then there is capital lock in risk. Once you buy the above hardware, you are probably stuck with it for a few years.If you have stable load now for 25 big bare-metal servers, it may be cheaper to go bare metal. Otherwise, there is a lot more involved in the decision than going to dell.com and pricing a server.

I worked for Westinghouse starting in 1986. Westinghouse went through the same issues investing in real estate loans in the 90s and did not survive.
I remember my manager telling me in the late 80s that the Financial Services division was making more money than the rest of the company combined. This did not make a lot of sense.
It ended up taking the entire company down a few years later.
My understanding is that the second sensor was listed as optional and not required. Therefore airlines decided to not select the option to save costs.
This is not the airlines fault. The second sensor should not have been optional if failure of the first sensor might lead to catastrophic failure.
This was my exact experience as well with the studies. We are similar in our sleep patterns.
The problem for IBM is that startups can't afford them.
For example, does Amazon have the CPU load to run many System Zs? Of course they do.
But Amazon probably started with one cheap PC connected to the web somewhere. And then two ... three .. and so on. By the time Amazon had the CPU load and business to need/afford a System Z, it was too late to change.
