It really depends from whose perspective you're looking at. If you are working for a startup this is exactly how you may think. If I am the owner I would probably think otherwise. There is always more work and more responsibilities that someone can take on, and I would expect my people to do just that. If you're doing something specific in half the time it normally takes, it doesn't mean you can't start doing something outside of your scope and expend your knowledge, maybe help others with their work.

In 2007 my mom and I opened up a deli/cafe. We had previous experience in this industry so we didn't think we would struggle. We went bankrupt two years after that. It was an awesome experience.

It is true the rent can kill a business but it also comes down to its location, parking, getting in a out of the parking (which pisses people off if its a busy street and they have to wait because of traffic), everything needs to be running smoothly.

Starting such business is also super expensive. The good thing is that we only had to purchase the equipment. I have a construction company so the reno and everything that needed to be done was done by us. I also have a web design and marketing company so all the advertising was done in-house. These probably helped us save 50k if not more.

I remember, we had snitches coming in an out who were hired by our competitors. They would also come in and look at the expiry date of every produce in hope to find something that has expired so they can make it public.

In the end, we were about 100k out.

Anyhow, it was an awesome businesses and people loved it, however, it just wasn't enough to keep it running.

I stared coding in grade 9 and soon after entered my first Skills Canada competition for web design. Back then Flash was super hot and everyone was using it. After that, I slowly started making websites in html, css, js. During my electrical engineering studies I touched on BASIC and other programming languages. After that I read more on different js frameworks and some python. Most of my learning is self-taught.

Few questions: How much time did it take you to build this? Is this an evening project? It costs £25 to list and £100 to award a project, am I getting this right? How do you select your coders? Why did you choose such saturated market, in a way at least? I do believe there is always room for more, just wondering.

Definitely not dangerous (maybe in the USA), you're just waiting for your light to switch. Better than standing and tapping on your phone, it seems fun, it involves another person across the street that you get to meet, high fives and a lot of smiles. This is how the life should be. Wait.. in America a strange wouldn't give you a high five, that would be just weird, why would someone do that? What if they have cooties?

Indeed they are but every plane needs to avoid bad weather as much as possible. Of course the bigger the plane the higher its limits.

Now on pilots, this really depends which pilots you are talking about. North American pilots, and here I am pointing at Canadian pilots more because I am in Canada and I am in the process of getting my PPL (for pleasure),however, I am sure this also applies to US pilots, very well trained. To get a job at a big airline you need experience, and where do you get the best experience, far up north where harsh weather, huge winds and tiny landing strips are located. I don't think that 3 years college will do, unless you are lucky.

I also talk to a lot of commercial pilots as my girlfriend is a flight attendant, so during the travels we go out and chat about everything.

As far as safety, over exaggerated, really. No one cares, well, people do but they shouldn't, because if someone wants to hijack I am sure they will find a way to do it. This is the big boys game on a government level. Tax payers are paying for scanners etc, whoever wins the bid makes them and they are sponsoring the next election. (I will not get into this here but you get the point). Scanners are useless.

Yes, but you are traveling and working as a web developer. Try starting a family in a 160sq RV, and work from there at the same time. You will go insane and get a divorce after 8 months. (I totally made the number up).

I am not saying that people cannot do it, when I was little we lived in an apartment with very tiny two bedrooms and a kitchen (4 people). I was sleeping on bunk beds ... Unless you are poor, are traveling in your RV, are an eco freak, or you're living in a densely populated area (China, Korea etc), there's just no reason for you to live in a tiny place.

This tiny house, however, would be great as a cabin where you can relax over the weekend, get away from city life.

You can compress these things and a lot of people have, but to live like this is another story.

I myself build homes, apartments, I also design kitchens, did flips, and I can tell you that I have not met one person that could live in a tiny box like that. Yes, it is a dream of everyone, to be very simple and live like this, but this is not going to happen.

She moved from 2,500sqft to 200sqft, why? You don't wake up one day and do that unless you cannot afford living in a house, and I don't care what she says. Maybe it's her cottage or trailer, I really don't know, but don't believe anything they say on the news.

A lot of people would go insane in a 200sqft space. It's like a cell. If anyone wants to try, please come live in my shed. It's very minimalistic, raw, super nice like this place.

Taking funding is ok as long as you write your own rules and the other party agrees, of course they need to be somewhat reasonable. I also agree that having some revenue prior would be much better, that way you know what you can expect in a month, two months, and so on. Of course, those are just business predictions, but these predictions can be very useful when taking a loan of some sort. Then you can actually do something like "I need 50k for 1 year @ 20% interest, here's my revenue, I will grow this business to x", write a 12 month contact and off you go. Do not give shares right off the start. There are people out there that will want shares, there are people that will give you a private loan, there are no banks that will do that (haha), and of course there is family, friends etc. Just don't f-it up if you're going this route.

I have been working for myself since 17-18, 10 years of self employment. I have been in the food industry (disaster), construction and web. I have had every single position at a company you can image. Just now, I think I can run any business (of course with more failures). I am just not there yet, taking my time, we'll see what 2014 has for me.
