Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics by Sussman and Wisdom explores some of the issues surrounding mathematical notation. Their primary thesis seems to be that by using uniform notation, s-expressions in this case, we can better understand and reason about mathematical concepts than what using standard math notation permits.
