Cactus leather is a new trend. I don't own any cactus leather products so I can't say how good it is, but surely it's possible to replace cowhide with something.

Even vegan (plastic) leather is significantly better from an environmental and emissions perspective than cowhide leather. The tanning process is not exactly eco-friendly, and neither is raising cows.

Just to finish off this Goldilocks story: I've been vegan for four years, and previously ate a meat and dairy heavy diet. I noticed basically no change to my gut health--it has been pretty good, with occasional minor issues, for my whole life.

In my ideal world, firing employees would be easy, common, and not catastrophic for the employee. Of course, this requires a strong social safety net to make sure people can go a few months between jobs without losing their home, healthcare, etc.

Netflix pays well, has a generous severance package, and is honest about its culture. I think there is nothing wrong with them making it easy to fire.

As another person who has struggled with depressive issues at various points in my life, I really like your list. I have ticked every one of those boxes at one time or another; all of them brought me down, took effort to fix, and improved my well-being when fixed.

I haven't encountered a single person in my young, left-wing, NYC bubble that demands I actively support trans women in female sport leagues, as opposed to not opposing them. I don't even know what the difference is between these things (does active support mean lobbying or volunteering?).

I do, however, have some family members that demand I actively oppose this, and get very mad when I profess neutrality.

I don't have strong feelings about Electron, but 50MB more memory for the same functionality does seem like a lot. If every app I have open on my machine suddenly used 50MB more memory, it would be a noticeable hit.

This really hits home for another JS outsider that likes the language but not the ecosystem. I like to do small personal projects in Node. Simple things like consuming the Google Sheets API feel great, but when I want to expand the scope of the project and start thinking about tests, caching, and "am I doing my modules/imports/package management the RIGHT way" I usually give up or switch to a different stack.

For Windows I would say it is. Windows doesn't come with vi, nano, or any other terminal text editor, and some kind of text editor is needed for pretty much anything you would do with a computer.

Yes, there are policy-focused epidemiologists and informatics-focused epidemiologists. My partner is the latter, so I'm much more familiar with that world, and that's what I associate with "epidemiology". There is overlap, of course, but I take your point that you can't necessarily know someone's quantitative analysis skills from knowing they are an epidemiologist.

I would just note that "a data scientist with working professional competence in say, R and Pandas" describes a good number of epidemiologists, who also have infectious disease, toxicology, and study design knowledge on top of this.

Many epidemiologists are effectively specialized data scientists, and I don't think a random data scientist could provide equal analysis. Sure, they can both run a regression, but you benefit from understanding particular study designs, as well as biology/chemistry/toxicology.

I don't know much about infectious disease epidemiology, but I'll use glyphosate toxicity as an example from environmental epidemiology. Glyphosate was found to be non-carcinogenic by the EPA, but if you review the literature on glyphosate toxicity, industry-affiliated researchers tended to study pure glyphosate, and these studies were the majority of those considered by EPA. Researchers without industry affiliation tended to study glyphosate in the formulations actually sold in products such as RoundUp, and found much stronger evidence of carcinogenic toxicity.

I don't think a generic data scientist would think to ask the question about glyphosate formulations, as many people at EPA did not.

I agree that asymptomatic transmission reduces this pressure, but symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers are often still contagious, and there is more public will to enact extreme precautions for more lethal illnesses.

So there is still some evolutionary benefit for lower lethality.

Eating farm animals requires you to grow 9 times as many crops to feed them as if you had just eaten the crops directly, since only about 9% of the food they eat is converted into edible flesh.

So even if you take this argument seriously, the insects and field animals are better off if you grow fewer crops, which you accomplish by directly eating the crops you grow, not feeding them to livestock.
