Is there really a market for a response though? Now, I'll be honest that I know very little about this market. What I do know from doing a decade of presales before covid hit, is that people who buy GPUs go for aggregate max on a big node farm. They were never supposed to stay permanent. Toll revenue is more than road maintenance. In fact, over 50% of toll revenue, is redirected to other uses, and increases close to 100% per decade. Some of it is used for mass transit - so people in cars, pay for people on the subway. Many toll roads (and city parking meters, and red light and speed cameras) are run by private companies, with taxpayer-paid city staff enforcing that private corporation's profit.

What can you do? Only thing I've found is to not participate, at a great inconvenience to yourself. No, I don't use city parking meters. I pay way, way more, for private parking - although I'm only in a car a few weeks per year, usually in a work-paid rental. Recently, a new regulation passed, allowing the national bank to take money out of people's accounts, if they receive over $11k in a 30 day period. about a decade ago, purchased a home half a mile away from a river. For the last 50 years, the river bank has been has been slowly moving outwards out due to erosion. I bought the house for a million, it's now worth two.

Lots of downtime, lots of patients affected, yet they report literal fake status reports up the chain and generalize-away every issue to the point that the generic statement hides the issue.

There is no vendor "duopoly" between google and apple. There are about a thousand flavors of Android, and a bunch of phone makers - and google isn't even the top Android seller. The only one I've used with a play store was for like a year in 2010.

There is a technology duopoly, but the technology part has nothing to do with google. Much like there's no triopoly between windows/macos/linux. Because "Linux" is not a vendor. Speaking as a guy who's done enterprise storage for close to 30 years, the main issue here is IO stack integration. There's almost none. There are people like Oracle that try to bypass at least some of these disconnected layers that don't work well together, but why don't the drive vendors do this? Intel makes a compiler for their CPUs. Why isn't there a WDFS that has built-in LVM?

Here's the main issue. You have your application that sits on a filesystem. The filesystem tries to predict what the application is doing. That sits on a volume manager. That's just a dumb table of pointers. That sits on top of a disk drive, talking to the RAM on the drive. Then you have the backend of the disk controller trying to predict what to put in RAM.

Oracle knows best what it's going to need next from the disk, based on some query it's running, if it expects a drop in IO soon where the disk can do background cleanup, if and when it's about to do a lot of reads once it's done with a lot of writes, in 3 minutes. The filesystem has no idea. The disk controller has no idea. Wouldn't it be great, more performant, and less wasteful, if the application could tell the disk drive about its behavior using some sort of standard API, and the disk controller could translate that to what the backend disk should do - whether it's the various types of spinning rust or different flash types?

TRIM is a very basic example of that. What we need is more things like TRIM for the application IO libraries to tell its intent to the backend controller, and that API is appropriate to be put in the filesystem, and just blindly pass it on all the way to the backend.

But that's my point, to answer the question asked. You're mirroring between two cloud providers, one cuts you off and you need to egress all your data ASAP from that provider, to a new one. If you have your primary local, you just push to the new provider free.

Example: my work places all our files, including your docs and desktop folder, on OneDrive. There is a local cache, but they don't actually let you do a full sync to local to minimize egress

Example: they replaced my laptop, I had about a TB of data generated on the old one. It's all in OneDrive. I power up the new laptop. I can't just sync everything to it - they disable that via policy. Every time I open something for the first time, it downloads. So if I wanted to say, copy all my crap to AWS. I addressed this point. What you are proposing - replacing roads with rail and trams in a huge train grid of suburbs, costs an insane amount more than a road. You are talking about charging people 10x the property taxes they are paying now. Remember, suburbs do not have the density and hence tax revenue of cities. A highrise has 500 people in it paying for a little chunk of road in front of it. The same length of road in the suburbs is covered by 5 single family homes.

But you say (buses!). Again, I addressed that. A bus, at a bus stop, is not something you are going to be able to do half of the time in suboptimal climates in half the country. Even in the 1/4 of the time with bad climate in the other half of the country, you still need to get around 25% of the time when you can't be waiting at the bus stop in 120 degree heat to get to work. And for that, you'll still need a car. So if you already have a car for that 25% of time, why then can't you just use it all the time?

The walkable plans you reference completely ignores this issue, and pretends the climate is perfect every time you need to go somewhere. You don't need to design things to be walkable, if everyone already has a car for the times it's not "walkable" outside.

Those olden days you dream of weren't as rosy as you think. People would show up to work freezing, wet, uncomfortable, and get sick from being in the freezing wind for a half hour "walking." They were also a lot less mobile, and going between places was a thing, not a multiple times a day part of life.

Here's the problem with this logic. No personal attack, but I want you to think about how similar it is to the nazis and China.

the people whose freedom of choice you are taking away for the good of society, are part of society, are part of "we," and the majority can't take their freedom just because it's overall good for that majority.

What you did is take a part of "we," made it "them," and made them the enemy. Don't do that.
