You should aim to be working on one project at a time in your team.

You're swimming against the tide with this. AI pilled management is driving teams to deliver more parallel workstreams, not fewer, with fewer, AI-augmented devs taking them on.

Context switching isn't seen as a cost. AI is seen as the solution to the bus factor and experience problem. Same goes with the issue of dev capacity.

IMO it's deeply misguided but it's crystal clear where the winds are blowing.

All of those industries benefited and continue to benefit from economies of scale in the manufacturing and delivery of their products. You're not making the case you think you are, and I have a suspicion the article's point is just sailing right past you.

That's still not the kind of efficiency the article is talking about.

They're referring to raw training and inference scaling and it's relationship (or lack thereof) to traditional economies of scale that we've seen with past technologies where they get cheaper as adoption increases, not more expensive.

Its true that the models requiring fewer turns and tokens due to increasing sophistication improves cost efficiency for users but that doesn't address the fundamental computational scaling problems of LLM architectures.

1.5B settlement where they admitted no wrongdoing and are indemnified? They burn 5B per year. If an individual did the same their lives would be destroyed. It's just another case of a corporation breaking the law and paying a fine as a cost of doing business.

And none of this changes the fact that they did it in the first place and were comfortable doing so, thereby demonstrating that they are not trustworthy actors. If they could spend another 1.5B to advance their models with ill-gotten training data, there's every reason to believe they'd do it all over again.

This is obviously untrue so either the author is knowingly lying or is plain incompetent. We had LLMs not being able to do simple high school mathematics a year back, now it is solving open problems in mathematics. Fields medalists in physics and mathematics are using it on a daily basis.

I'd argue the opposite. If the price is largely vibes, you could see wild swings if sentiment changes dramatically. The bitcoin market is an excellent example of this. Worse, the recent BBB- rating on their bond issuance suggests a lack of lender confidence, and if their stock continues to decline those factors could compound.

Does it? Because these companies systematically broke copyright law by illegally downloading terabytes of copyrighted content and there's been no consequences.

Past behaviour informs future trust and I wouldn't trust these companies whatsoever.

Just out of curiosity though why do people not want smart AI weapons?

Because the minute you defer decision making to a machine you eliminate human accountability.

Any time the robot is used to do something illegal or immoral, you can just say "it was a bug" or "that's not what I really meant". It enables plausible deniability.

We see this every time AI is allowed to make decisions. That robot promoted violent extremism in your feed? It misidentified a black man? It disproportionately chose men in hiring decisions? shrug Its the algorithm. Who can argue with the algorithm?

Likewise any attempt to codify liability is typically avoided at all costs because the purpose of those systems is what they do.

Honestly--and I say this as a flesh-and-blood human--I continue to be pissed off that AI has ruined load-bearing parts of my vocabulary. You're absolutely right that it's starting to trigger me when I read random blog posts and come across these linguistic ticks, but I can't help but be resentful. Humans invented language and now robots are coopting it.

Yeah welcome to the state of the art in measuring AI impact. I have contacts at a few different larger tech companies that are fully AI pilled (the one I work at included) and every single one has forgotten the last 50 years of lessons in measuring dev productivity and hyperfocused on PR throughput and token usage.

Fun fact: all the data I've seen suggests at most a 50% uplift in those metrics. And that's at the top percentiles. Its very clear that the already high performers see the greatest uplift but anyone in that meaty middle will only see incremental gains.

I was simply disputing the claim that LLMs are good at all languages, and that their biases--both intentional and otherwise--will swing the entire industry.

That's absolutely not true. Differently languages have greater or lesser representation in the training sets. You see a similar bias toward specific libraries within a given ecosystem, so much so that I worry about AI created technical monocultures as AI generated code converges to specific languages, packages, etc.

The LLM companies have truly astounding power to now steer the direction of the entire industry. It should worry all of us.

Sure but context matters and given this is Hacker News, a lot of discussion centers around tech as a profession (and that's doubly true for AI adoption). You can forgive folks for jumping to natural conclusions. :D

It's coming from a place of objecting to burnout/overwork culture.

Recently I witnessed a CTO mention in a public channel that with Claude remote control people can now work while getting a coffee or other breaks during the day.

Tech is actively moving in a direction of destroying all the gains from the labour movement in service of enriching capital out of a combination of FOMO or fear of being replaced.

So yeah, when folks say "hey look now I can even work during leisure activities!" yeah, the reaction is negative.

I'm far more surprised that this surprises you.

Like...you're a programmer? And you don't like to read? I assumed that people who enjoy software would be into intellectual stimulation but I've learned that this is wrong.

The rise of vibecoding and the disdain many in the industry hold for the skill of software development should fully disabuse you of any vestiges of this notion...

Every single day, here, on "Hacker" news I see folks describe coding as just a means to an end, and that things like code quality, architecture, etc, don't matter.

Welcome to late stage capitalism, where if you can't immediately monetize it its not worth doing (consider how this might explain the rise of gambling as recreation).

But that's not the problem being highlighted in that quote you clipped out and responded to.

The problem that quote (and this entire post and the folks that produced it) is putting a finger on is that vibecoding makes it very easy to build large piles of brittle, entangled code where all those early velocity gains are paid back as evolving the codebase takes more and more time (and, crucially, tokens).

No amount of <insert methodology here> replaces good judgement about architecture/design that ultimately leads to more maintainable, extensible code. That was true before AI and it remains true today.

Now eventually AI may get to the point where it's autonomously generating code that's structurally as good or better than what any experienced human would create.

So far, IME, that is not yet this case and nothing can yet substitute for an experienced human in the loop to steer AI toward better decision-making.

And before it's said, yes, that also means humans made ugly balls of mud in the before time. That term obviously came from somewhere.

But that only proves that AI is as good as prior humans that did a bad job, which on the one hand is impressive, and on the other hand is deeply alarming when you know there's folks out there letting these things loose without any supervision.

Of course if all one is doing is tossing off and walking away from greenfield projects, man, vibecoding is magical. I suspect a lot of the "we never look at code anymore" claims come from this world.

But there's another word for that: slop.

Eh it's nothing new. Outsourcing comes from the same spirit.

Perversely I find myself increasingly blaming the growth of product management divorced from engineering as the source of some of this.

Everyone wants to be the next Jobs, but somehow they missed that it was the marriage of high quality design and high quality engineering that got Apple where they are today.

Rather, the lesson they learned is that PMF and UX and yadda yadda yadda are all that matter and coding is just a means to an end.

It'll be interesting to see how many companies discover that you can't achieve those ends if you build on a broken foundation.

Our conclusion was that we should not be concerned what search or queuing algorithm or data structure is being used.

Not to be too snide, but if that's your reductionist view of the work of software development, I'm not surprised you're comfortable vibecoding without a human in the loop.

That should *not be a thing*.

You bought the device.

You own it.

It should be yours to do with as you see fit.

That applies to phones or appliances or cars unless your individual right to modify your devices begins to interfere with the rights of others (think: safety, tragedy of the commons scenarios, etc).

This is how we end up with cars we can't repair, phones we can't upcycle, TVs that advertise to us without our consent.

Its insanity.
