There are some relevant considerations in that document but I found it to be very dismissive. SSL for example is not hard to implement, and going ssl-always is now quite common.
Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't want to advocate slapping some crypto lib onto a site with a bunch of marketing script. A project from scratch with these considerations might some day get it done.

Sigh. There are so many people doing this. I couldn't access the main article but read the Kickstarter page. From what I understand this is a plea for funding for (basic) components that are already built by other teams, but with an extra layer of encryption and a copy-cat UI.
Why not just focus on encrypting content on an existing decentralized network project like pump.io or GNU social? Or any other open network? Build on some momentum that is already there rather than debug message transport for life?
They're reorganizing to hire Steve Jobs (they never got the memo).
I'm curious about this as well, I'm looking at getting a ThinkPad for battery life. I've heard they support Linux well, but is there any component(s) that I should avoid getting for Linux? I run Debian.
Mac is not an option for me, I want Linux-on-hardware.
I had a similar experience, briefly maintaining an OpenX install until one day we had a security issue. Turns out that nobody had been applying software updates and that software has lots of problems with it. I spent a week getting it up-to-date to be sure I had everything cleaned out from the hack.
At the end of the week I decided that the client wasn't allowed to run OpenX anymore and we found a different solution that worked within their CMS. Less bells and whistles, less problems.
Every time I click any link on HN that points to qz.com I get QZ without any reference to the article in question. Currently it points to "Why Tesla wants to get into the battery-swapping business that’s failing for everyone else"... in Chrome. Firefox seems to work. Terrible website.
