It's only significant if it's more than a few pounds/dollars which is why high value retail tend to have competent security.

The source code by nature covers a subset of the standard as it can't cover every logical edge case and it isn't verified. At least the documentation is the verification source.

Hardly. Here's my perspective which will hopefully make you understand.

I live in a poverty stricken area. The supermarkets shove the following distribution of fruit out (I know this because my wife works in one as well):

- 20 bags of 5x apples for £1.89 each. 20% go in the bin.

- 100 pink lady apple at £0.75 each. 80% go in the bin.

- 20 cheap apples (one tray) at around £0.12 each. 0% go in the bin.

Now, why should I take the last single cheap apple which instantly prices out the poorer people which is clearly the intention of the supermarket which is to upsell to the pink ladies or bags of apples?

Fuck 'em to hell. There is no honour or integrity in capitalism. Trample over everyone to make profit.

Spot on this is normal. I work in the financial services sector and stuff still arrives on dialup and ftp from mainframes regularly in all sorts of odd formats. SOAP is what is in the executive bathrooms and JSON is the cleaner's name and that is it :)

This is quite neat compared to the average shitfest people leave inside wordpress templates. I had to unpick a whole 200 page intranet written with wordpress and buddypress (which stinks) recently and rewrite it as a non-wordpress site as it's hit the inevitable hack brick wall.

That's actually a load or horse shit (excuse my French). I've worked with both ODF and OOXML extensively as we write document templating software and I'll pick OOXML over ODF any say. It's less quirky, there are decent COTS tools to handle it and the output rendering is consistent regardless of which tool you pick to do the rendering. It's also better documented and way more intuitive.

I really don't know where you are getting these facts from other than the usual spiel that Microsoft does only evil.

The standards are open, published and free to implement (look for Microsoft open specifications). The documentation is way better than anything else out there.
