I pay for last.fm to give me recommendations for music that I will properly like, then I buy the best tracks in iTunes. I would do the same with tv-shows if Apple would let me (non-us, don't even get me started). I am a male CS student, so by your comment I shouldn't spend any money at all.

My parents had a simple rule they instituted after our food fights: You can eat what is on the table or go hungry - obviously if there was only 4 of some kind, I would only get to eat one.

That means that if I didn't care about a particular kind of food I didn't have too eat it, but on the other hand I wouldn't eat junk because it wasn't served.

The problem with eating everything that is on your plate is that it steams from a time when you could actually risk not being able to afford food tomorrow - today it just causes overeating.

Then come up with simple rules (no more than 8 words total) for when to use one or the other.

English has the most moddy grammar of all languages, with so many exceptions and shit - this is one of the things I hope disappear as the world embraces English.

I have seen how much time Facebook eats, so between Reddit and hacker news I don't have more to waste.

As for the "login using facebook", you can do the same with openid (heck facebook is an openid provider) - but without pissing of the part of your users that don't have an account or don't want to let you know it.

That might work, but why give them the ability to post stories initially? That way, to get karma they would have to be able to impress the insiders with what they have to bring to the table personally and can't just find some good stuff made by others.

You could even combine them, so that the threshold is different - you can post stories with karma of, say, 30 but you can't vote before you have hit a karma of 500.

Perhaps not, but you can ship a physical drive to Amazon and they will put it into the cloud for you.

The problem is that there is way of the developers to filter the companies - I don't want any company to be able to see my CV, I want much more info and control, if I am to pay (especially that much money) I want better service, uptime guarantees etc (I can't look a gift horse in the mouth, but only a moron will buy one without looking well at it) - and the Stack Overflow team will never go for that.

If start ups shouldn't pay for the privileges of pitching, why should employees pay for the right to pitch to employers?

I would expect that what I store in any cloud server is never lost, so having two problems would EBS would be enough for me not to trust them again.

That might work for them because they are using the builtin webkit engine - but you can do the same by controlling IE via OLE, and unlike the method used in the article it is no different from a user who browsed with IE normally.

I doubt it somewhat - Google isn't the kind of company that likes to be in the position of dependence on anybody else.

My bubble alarm has been going on for years, but I predicted that neighter Facebook nor Twitter would ever have a viable business model and I have already been proved wrong on Facebook at least - I assumed that it was the harder of the two.

Having said that, it still doesn't smell right.

PG is wrong on the subject of patents though: the problem with software patents is that if you are building a car the price of having a lawyer work out if you are violating a couple patents is a lot less than 1%, but it would properly make it many thousand times more expensive for a startup to develop a piece of software (assuming that we don't count the founders time).

And unlike physical patents it costs nothing to produce the software once the innovation has been made, so there is no need for a small guy to have something to sell to a big company to ensure the innovator is getting something for his efforts.

They would properly make more by jumping ahead of the game and starting to earn 75 million/year.

The best solution would be to produce content nobody else has - but that means doing real journalism (which has not happened since Watergate).

Sure you have to gamble, but the only way this will make money for Murdoch is if makes less money on people who comes to his site from a search than it costs to serve that page; unless he has gotten the worst bandwidth-deal of the century.

Sadly it does not appear as if iTunes video store is available in Denmark, so I just read a lot of the free content.

Used to be so, but Skype is free enough so people use it and the network effect keeps people locked in to the Skype network.
