I hear you and I agree. The HN vibe is nitpicky, for sure. I was a little surprised the comments here were 100% negative (or not positive, to be fair). I usually wouldn't bother reading all the comments, but I care about Ruby, so I was a little more irked by the negativity than usual. :)

As I type this, every top-level comment here is a criticism or a nitpick. A cool new feature is being added to Ruby. People have done difficult and meaningful work that benefits others. And this is the response here.

I'm psyched for this feature. As someone who has worked primarily with Ruby and Elixir, I really appreciate the design and safety affordances of immutable data. I'm glad there's a bit more immutability in Ruby and that, in general, the language keeps progressing. Thank you Ruby language devs.

Wow, memory lane here. My first programming job was working on Symbian apps. I think I had a 1MB heap and something like an 8KB stack to work with. Good times!

I'm an old timer. I paid a small, one-time fee over ten years ago and have used Pinboard (not without some frustration) ever since. I paid the subscription fee when I received the email a couple days ago. It only seems fair.

I spent a lot of time on it and about halfway through the process decided it needed to be split into two parts. The second part is still in draft status.

Even though the article is long, it's very specific. I left some things out for sure. A book on naming makes sense, if for no other reason than we need to be having these conversations.

As a motorcyclist, this has become my primary concern on the roads in the past few years. I constantly and actively check for drivers using their phones. If I can see their eyes or heads glancing up and down, I get far away. If they're having trouble staying in their lane, I get far away. At night, if their faces are illuminated in a blue glow, they're holding their phones and I get far away. I use those techniques in addition to all the other safety measures you get taught by the MSF. If I didn't love riding so much, I'd quit. Seriously. It's more dangerous than it's ever been. You have to be so diligent. But on two wheels, an open road without distracted drivers is still as glorious as it has ever been.

I think your argument is focused too far along the timeline. Yes, the Republican majority was elected. What's in dispute is the legitimacy of how they came to be elected, given the proven racist bias of how districts came to be. Different (fairer) districting might not change the Republican majority status, but it probably wouldn't be so lopsided. (BTW: Asheville is almost completely blue, too.)

I love the ideas, but I doubt the reality of ever getting this workflow implemented. I've been a professional developer for 17 years and exactly zero of the companies I've worked for would implement this process. Besides in research environments, is there any software shop out there doing this?

The problem isn't necessarily the MacGyver hacks. It's building stuff on top of them that hurts. If you realize you're making a MacGyver hack, the responsible thing to do is refactor when it causes you pain. If that time is never, congrats, you got away with it. But hacks on top of hacks, in the interest of some management constraint is, in my experience, a recipe for failure.

Wow. I would argue that you have quite a bit more than "relatively few moments of 'brogrammer' culture" there. A TWSS bot? I can't imagine that ever being okay on any dev team I've ever worked on, including my present team which includes no women. Good on you for fighting back in a way which really speaks to those who needed to hear it most.

You don't want to test external APIs. You probably do want to test how your application behaves in response to using the APIs. One way is to mock the API calls with canned responses. Another way is to use a tool like VCR (https://github.com/myronmarston/vcr) to record and playback API interactions.

The opposite, libertarian answer (and the way we seem to be going right now) would be to let those who can't capitalize on the bounty simply suffer. Cut social services along with their jobs, and hope they fade into the distance.

I thought the same thing. Perhaps "lazy" or "inconsiderate" are better words to describe people's behavior before the sign went up.

It looks like the 20110129 update adds Cmd-number functionality for switching between tabs on OS X.

I think it's general sentiment against Java, the language. Many I know, including me, have been there and don't want to go back. At the same time the JVM is a pretty interesting space for language runtime.

Java is popular in the broad sense, but it doesn't seem to be very popular with the developers I know that are creating and interested in creating mobile apps.
