Renewals for people who are already working for an employer. Renewals don’t require searching for an american employee.

Also, h1-b is limited to 6 years (one renewal) unless I-140 (green card) has been filed for the employee. In which case, renewals become unlimited until green card is granted.

For Indians the GC queue is nearly infinite, hence too many renewals.

The article said he gathered information and that cancer is a disease of information and in next para that the cancer is in remission. How? Did I miss something?

Did cancer got scared of the massive google doc? Just share how if you have found a treatment and if you truly care about people and the world. Just Share

Honestly I'm an apple guy and felt the same until I drove their Blazer EV and loved the native google maps. This is way better than projecting from phone. The native integration knows about car's battery state all the time and auto-suggests stops. Any native map in car do they but they usually aren't good quality maps. In GM's case, the native maps are google maps. I can also sign in on my google account and I don't need internet to use it (in case I'm in a remote area).

I feel I want every car to have native google maps now.

Waymo Safety Impact 4 months ago

I was sold on Waymo when in San Francisco I saw it treat a human holding a Stop sign in a construction zone just like a human driver did.

For anyone who doesn't know this, in a construction zone if a human is holding a stop sign, it means stay stopped until they flip the sign and suggest you to move slowly. Waymo just handled this as a human would

There has always been this argument that allowing H1bs to switch jobs easily and clearing the green card backlog for India will increase labor liquidity in the market which may in turn result in higher wages for local and foreign population.

Employers don't want this. Policymakers also don't want this because higher wages (for everyone) may put inflation pressure. Instead, the middle ground is to have employers have their way by having hostage labor, while at the same time, keep spreading hate for H1bs so that local population doesn't feels alienated by policymakers.

now you can create good memories with your family without meeting them

It's a good move but blanket 200k may mean that a kid from a well-off family in Iowa with a 150k income is able to get free tution while a kid with not so well off family in California with a 210k income is unable to get free tution.

Income as a number doesn't have much meaning until Cost of living is taken into account.

+1 on installing supervised on stock debian. It feels like any other software and I still get to keep full control of my system.

I’m currently running, HA, Frigate and pihole on same machine

We need more projects like home assistant. I started using it recently and was amazed. They sell their own hardware but the whole setup is designed to works on any other hardware. There are detailed docs for installation on your own hardware. And, it works amazingly well.

Same for their voice assistant. You can but their hardware and get started right away or you can place your own mics and speakers around home and it will still work. You can but your own beefy hardware and run your own LLM.

The possibilities with home assistant are endless. Thanks to this community for breaking the barriers created by big tech

There are plenty of software engineers but many of them may not be qualified for the currently open jobs. So, yes, there are open jobs and there are unhired americans but programs like H1-b make even more highly talented pool of people available which in turn increases innovation and productivity in economy.

So, it's not just a plain numbers game, it's more about innovation, productivity, talent pools and of course, capitalism.

Years back I took a "common sense" decision to eliminate plastic from my food storage and cooking and only use steel or glass. The basis for this decision was primarily that there have been many instances in world where after decades it was found that something generally used was harmful for humans. Steel and glass have existed longer than plastics and are generally known to be safe (also I have to use some products, can't leave everything).

for people arguing about the quality of research, yes you can argue on research but use your common sense and ask yourself if plastics are really safe?

New iMac with M4 2 years ago

I have this 2017 iMac and I hate that I can't use it as an external display. Felt it more during covid since I wanted to plug my work laptop on it and it as an external display. That said, this display is old and I feel it more now when editing/viewing HDR videos. Though it was one of the top displays till a few yrs back
