Did you invest in Tesla and now invest in Open AI because who cares about ethics if you can make money?

Anthropic has the obviously the better product and were seemingly ethically better until they burnt their developer goodwill and started accepting Musk infrastructure.

But does having a better product actually translate to making more money?

Should I just lay down and die because there's no good choice when it comes to investing in this product they market as killing off people's livelihoods?

This is obviously a flippant comment that shouldn't be taken seriously. But the loss of LiveLeak seems like the loss of the journalism that the Internet was supposed to bring. There were a lot of odd things posted on there with some unneeded commentary but it was a place that would post unfiltered content that other places were scared to post. A lot of it was disgusting that I wouldn't watch, but it's weird to think that the Internet is censored now in a way where it's hard to even find it.

You can find areas of propaganda where site rule breaking will be allowed if it serves the interest of the owner, but you really have to seek it out. It's even weirder that the latest generation is self censoring common words so they can show up on sites like TikTok. Billionaires buying newspapers to censor seems less strange but sadly something I also didn't expect.

I learned the concept of social engineering in middle school through those AOL CDs. There was a culture of making proggies and learning about the inner workings of how AOL the program and the company worked if you were interested and knew where to look.

If you called into a certain department at AOL, you could tell them you were a business and would like to put out their CDs for display. So long as the order was for under 1000 or so they would send them to you, for free, directly to the address of the "business".

I also learned in middle school that CDs sting but don't really hurt and the various ways to launch attacks in a CD war with friends and classmates. You throw CDs vertical to be precise and sideways for a crazy flight path to confuse your opponents.

Sadly I also discovered that all the racist didn't die in the 70s, as the owner of one of the largest AOL hacking discussion forums I frequented loved to talk about how he would move if a black family ever moved into his neighborhood.

There is nothing at all to be gained by advertising piracy, especially to the streaming companies.

Using statistics to lie shows your weak position. Slaves were the backbone of the southern economy. Saying slavery only was supported by 1.6% of the population is the equivalent of only counting the owners of the church building when discussing whether the south was/is religious.

And yes, I tend to group different forms of discrimination together. You can substitute Jim Crow laws, the Chinese exclusion act, Japanese internment camps, or some other form of discrimination in your head if you like. But its useful to know that if someone says that slavery wasn't so bad and is ok with it, that I am wasting my time with a fully bad person.

A majority of people in the US at one time felt slavery was perfectly fine. A majority of people in the southern US that could vote supported the Ku Klux Klan and Jim Crow laws at some point too.

Would you have supported these positions and justified it with other people think the same way too? Being in the majority can make you a bad person.

Robert E Lee was a traitor to the country that fought for slavery. The rewriting of history and spin from the Lost Cause to talk about how reluctant he was, how he went to church, and how nice he was to other white people that supported slavery does not mean he wasn't a bad person.

Discrimination against gay people is usually justified by religion in "polite" conversation, but slavery often was too during its time. In actuality its usually just a hatred with the justification made after the fact.

I feel as bad for the farmers who voted for this as I feel for the farmers who were hurt by the civil war and the ending of slavery. They knew what they were supporting, thought they would be unaffected and actually benefit from the result.

Some US states have started trying to ban or require ID for Bluesky. Is it possible to self host on your own hardware that allows somebody to get around that. If not the decentralization doesn't seem real.

You also do what black people have known since the civil war ended. You run for office. Hispanic Americans have learned this and their voices are now heard, Asian Americans also seem to finally understand this point. Gay Americans and other minorities are also running and winning. The answer is to never sit out.

Black people have known for decades, you vote for the people that don't actively hate you.

Sitting out of the process does absolutely nothing, whether its a protest vote, pretending that politics don't affect you, or just giving up completely. The people who get elected in those situations always 100% ignore you.

When people are in office that are at least willing to listen, you then make a lot of noise and put on pressure. You might get ignored mostly, since you are a minority voting block, but you can make incremental gains and even sometimes big wins.

An insurance company CEO was famously shot in broad day light just before he went into a meeting to celebrate his accomplishment of denying people healthcare for his company's profits. Nobody felt bad except other CEOs and the people they directly pay because everyone has a story of the insurance company putting profit over people. They did not get rich by treating more people.

I think the US should absolutely stop giving money to Israel, there seems to be no benefit at all and it supports their genocide. But I also see no reason to actually support Palestine. The current conflict can be traced back to the October attacks, but then those attacks can be traced back to some attacks Israel did and back and forth until you get to the Old Testament and probably before that.

It's a religious conflict that won't go away unless you remove religion from it. I don't expect that to happen during my lifetime so I'd rather we just pull the tax dollars out of the region.

I'm a black developer and have never had another developer tell me about their support for Trump. The past 10 years have made it plainly obvious why.

It has also made me realize how difficult life was for my parents and grandparents, who were all born before the civil rights act.

The civil rights act passed when Trump was in college so he and the other elderly members of the other branches also saw the lead up to it. Every action I see is to prevent anything like that again. Or to personally enrich themselves.

There is an argument to be made that Waze helps white people avoid prosecution where as an anti-ICE app based on their current focus mostly does not. Google created a monopoly by making the product great with unobtrusive ads and now is trying to change the deal. There is absolutely already a plan in place where the number of paying premium users hits some critical number and they "test out" short ads. I am not going to reward them.

I just checked my uBlock stats inside of AdNauseum on my personal laptop. This is a machine I have not used regularly in over 2 years. Being generous I am assuming every ad blocked was static, not animated, had no sound, and required no interaction by me to skip, so just was a one second glance.

I have gotten back 115+ days of my life to do things I actually want to do. 10.34 million ads. From one single machine, in just Firefox. I now have AdGuard on my network and use Tailscale to block ads on all my devices. There is no world where I ever go back to seeing ads that I can block and definitely will not be rewarding them for trying to push ads on what was a great product.

This opinion is the exact thinking that has lead to the massive layoffs in the design industry. Their jobs are being destroyed because they think lawsuits and current state of the art will show they are right. These models actually can't produce unique input and if you use them for ideation they do only help you get to already solved problems.

But engineers aren't being fired completely in droves because we have adapted. The human can still break down the problem, tell the LLM to come up with multiple different ways of solving the problem, throw away all of them and asking for more. My most effective use is usually looking and seeing what I would do normally, breaking it down, and then asking for it in chunks that make sense that would touch multiple places, then coding details. It's just a shift in thinking like knowing when to copy and paste when being DRY.

Designers are screwing themselves right now waiting for case law instead of using their talents to make one unique thing not in the training set to boost their productivity and shaming tools that let them do that.

I don't really have an opinion on Wagner's music because he is dead. Michael Jackson similarly feels fine.

But it feels more and more terrible to stream Kanye, a contender for one of the best in producing and rapping, every time he opens his mouth because you know you're helping support his life style. But if you ripped his albums you can still enjoy the previous art.

But it's nice to know more about the riches finances and we should demand more. Papa John's fired their CEO for being racist, but he still holds significant stock, so I continue to avoid their pizza. Tesla could do the same and hopefully it still shouldn't matter without a complete sell off.

It needs to be the "shame and embarrassment" Nazis felt at the end of WWII and not the traditional shame and embarrassment they are used to feeling after losing the civil war and Jim Crow laws. It will just happen again in a generation otherwise.
