I had a similar experience.

The difference is that was restricted to just computer lab. Now kids have computers on their desks during many more classes. I don’t think it is reasonable to expect they can stay focused.

I agree the problem you are describing also exists.

But I think the GP here is describing when people really can’t program. Like they can only write trivial programs by copy/pasting code from stackoverflow, and they don’t understand CS at all.

That is a different issue then knowledgeable devs cutting corners to meet deadlines.

In my experience, the emphasis on cross organization “impact” just leads principal engineer hopefuls to try to force other teams to sign onto large projects that require multiple teams to put in effort.

This rarely is beneficial work the company should/must do, instead it is promotion driven development.
