Aside from arguments about performance and memory safety, I'm generally more likely to try something written in Rust (or Go) because projects in those languages tends to be easy to build or download as a static binary. For Rust projects, `cargo install <name>` generally works. On the other hand, when I see something written in C++ or Python, it's an indicator that there may be significantly more work involved

I live in the US and I see something similar when shopping at Aldi. They charge like 5 or 10 cents per bag, but it's enough that most people will bring their own or not use bags at all. It's a small fee, but it has a significant impact, and it's great that you can still get bags if you need them.

I'd much prefer cities and states impose a small tax like this instead of a ban. It would reduce usage without risking harmful, unintended consequences like we see in California.

It's quite easy to spin a false narrative when you cherry-pick cases, misrepresent facts, and leave out important context.

If this is the case I'm thinking of, the protesters had broken down a gate and were trespassing on their property. What were they supposed to do in that situation? Risk their lives and property by putting themselves at the mercy of the mob?

Did you actually read the article? If this was just due to increased diagnosis, one would expect rates of self-harm and suicide to stay the same or fall as kids are able to get better treatment for mental health issues. Instead, we see the opposite happening, self-harm is going up in lockstep with diagnosis, which suggests that the increase in diagnosis corresponds to a real increase in mental health problems among teens.

Much of the Earth's surface is not suitable for growing trees, either because it's too dry, to wet, to cold, poor soil or lack of soil, etc. The article gives examples of planting in places where trees don't typically grow, on coastlines and in deserts, so it's not at all surprising that the trees planted there died. This is why I've always been skeptical of tree planting initiatives. In areas where they can survive, trees will just naturally appear on unused land, there's no need to plant them. If this isn't happening on it's own, it's probably because the conditions there aren't right for them.

The Asians present in North America are not a random sample. A large portion of them came here specifically to work in STEM or other fields requiring high levels of intelligence and education. It's very probable that the ones here are, on average, significantly more intelligent than both the average American and the average Asian in Asia.

There's tons of sample tests, vocabulary flashcards, and advice on test taking strategy available completely free online. There's no secret information or techniques taught in these expensive SAT prep classes that you can't find on Youtube, Google or Khan Academy. I didn't spend a single cent on SAT prep (and not much time either) and still managed to get a 1500.

So is height, and historically there have been large differences in height between the rich and poor. In modern developed countries, however, there doesn't seem to be any significant difference based on socioeconomic level. That leads me to believe that these "nutritional deficiencies" don't exist and are not what is causing any observed gap in IQ or academic achievement.

This is not a good example because the immigration process itself is highly selective. For the most part, only best and brightest from Nigeria are able to come to the US. Try comparing the average black American to the average Nigerian in Nigeria instead.

Nomadic people are quite capable of conquering land, the most obvious example being Genghis Khan, who managed to build the Mongol empire into the largest in human history.

It is true there is a general trend in history of agricultural societies displacing hunter/gather societies, but that's simply because agriculture generates more calories per square kilometer than a hunter/gatherer lifestyle. As populations grow beyond the carrying capacity of the natural environment, hunter/gatherers either forced to adopt agriculture or get conquered by the larger armies of those people that have.

Anyone even remember the name of the black man with a history of racist posts that killed 6 and injured 62 during the Waukesha Christmas parade last year? Didn't think so

These "hate hoaxes" are quite common. A few of the more prominent examples from recent years include Jussie Smollett, the Rolling Stone rape story, Yasmin Seweid, and Covington Catholic. Come to think of it, it seems like most of the major stories about some racist or sexist incident turn out to be false.

It's not surprising that people do this, given how much value modern society places on "victimhood" and being a member of some oppressed group. What's more worrying is the tendency of the media and society to accept these accusations uncritically and jump on the bandwagon to condemn the alleged wrongdoer.

I agree this was a bad example. Of course people who try and copy the strategy of a very successful person are not going to be as successful themselves, because the people that come later are going to be competing with millions of others doing the same thing. If you want that level of success, you probably have to be ahead of the curve and do something different from what most people are currently doing.

You can get all of this stuff without going without going to college and spending ridiculous amounts of money. Go to museums, watch YouTube, visit relevant internet forums, buy used college textbooks, etc. I taught myself Spanish this way. It was something I wanted to do, but I knew it probably wouldn't make me any money of it (I haven't), so I'm glad I did that rather than spending $100k+ to learn it in college.

Maybe, but how much does that matter? If the bias of these scientists is leading them to publish incorrect or low quality research, then Nature should reject it on the grounds that it's bad science. The fact that Nature feels the need to publish this is basically an admission that the political ideology of their leadership is not able to stand up to scientific scrutiny.

Sure, the values you picked for your example make the Minimax strategy look reasonable. You can just as easily choose values which make it look silly:

1) 1% of people earn $1 per day, and 99% of people earn $100 per day 2) Everyone earns $1.01 per day

I think most people, myself included, would take their chances with the first option. The Veil of Ignorance is a useful thought experiment, but I don't think many people would consider a simple Minimax algorithm to be reasonable, and would take into account the well-being of the average person as well.

This is a very poor attempt at a strawman, nobody thinks that Twitter is where scientific research is funded or conducted. Its role in the process is that of the stick, not the carrot. When people, including scientists, make statements or publish results that challenge certain political narratives, users on Twitter will harass, boycott and/or dox that person, their family, and their employer, leading to a climate of fear and the inability to have open and honest discussion on a number of topics.

I've used `cyclictest` for this before, it's a simple command line application that measures how long it takes to wake up and run a user space process in response to an interrupt. I've used it in the context of minimizing latency for network and audio applications. I'm not sure how much this relates to desktop application responsiveness as there are additional layers involved.

I'd guess most of the men that are looking for a "real relationship" are doing so because they want to find somebody to have children with, especially at 30+. In general they are not going to invest time and energy into building a relationship with someone that lacks the proper organs to conceive a child.

This is quite different from insider trading in the private sector. In addition to having information that is not public, legislators also have the power to influence the value of their investments by passing legislation favorable to companies they are invested in or harmful to their competition. Does anyone think lawmakers can be objective when they may have millions of dollars at stake?
