I always wondered about single individuals having an out-sized impact in tech. It is usually system/teams which make things happen. I am skeptical when one person is given most of the credit, and ignore all nameless minions who toil long hours to do the real work. Curious to hear others' perspectives on this.

I will always remember him as the guy who would willingly collude with other mentees of Bill Campbell to not hire engineers from each others companies. Willingly trying to keep the salaries of engineers low is pure evil. They even tried to rope-in Zuckerberg into this gentleman's agreement. Zuck asked them to buzz off. When Eric is involved in shady practices like these, how do all other leaders on twitterverse who are singing his praises justify their pandering. Age discrimination for older software engineers is real. It gets enforced in subtle ways. It is up or out culture at the end.

Age discrimination doesn't get the same coverage as gender, race or sexual orientation discrimination. I wish companies also added age in the diversity reports, and if they did talk about why there are such a few percentage of older folks in engineering. If we wish to make engineering career to span several decades, we should all actively try to get o address this.

That Google is no different from all other companies in the valley as the values the company espouses are just fluff when rubber meets the road. Executives are exempt or excused. Different standards for execs compared to rank-and-file.

Google has spent so much PR and money to convince employees that they are different from other companies. They are not. It is a hard pill to swallow for many starry-eyed employees who drank the cool-aid. Company has to fight tooth and nail to keep up the pretense before everyone internalizes that, "The emperor has no clothes".

Is Page still actively involved in Google? With the walkouts, and anger at Google's top level management for paying hush money to Andy, does he still have credibility with employees? Will they follow this leader? Will they consider him authentic? He is still an example of what great leadership is all about?

People are fallible and sometimes show poor judgement. I get that. Just curious how does one come out of this unscathed. Will Google HR use PR techniques to protect Larry's aura at Google. Normal people usually get fired. Founders it seems are untouchable, especially at Google. Will be fascinating to see how all of this plays out.

For a long time, I don't think they even had a formal paternal leave policy or only had a just a couple of weeks for Dads. They are definitely a late mover in this area. They had to be shamed (Infamous NYTimes article, peers bragging their generic benefits etc) to provide better paternity and maternity leave policies. Current atmosphere of asking for these kind of benefits were almost laughable within the walls of Amazon 10 years ago; You would have either got yelled or scoffed at. Glad to see this effort. Hope they succeed. I know a lot of people in industry will be rooting for them, and many employees secretly hoping for them to succeed. It is good for Amazonians and industry in general. If the famously laggard company in providing good benefits is being put on spot to up its game to take care of employees, we should all cheer for Momazonians!

I don't see anyone above Staff level or many product/marketing/sales people in the signed letter. Are staff+ engineers, manageres and non-engineers at Google mostly supportive of Dragonfly?

Is David expecting Acton to show gratitude that Facebook bestowed him billions of dollars? Did Facebook do charity or was it doing business purchasing WhatsApp? If you believe in markets, then Facebook purchased WhatsApp by paying what they considered a fair value to keep it off the hands of Google. They paid a pretty penny but it is all business.

Also, walking away from ~ $850 mil and investing time and money into Signal speaks a lot about Brian's commitment to privacy. He admits he was a sellout. He didn't mince words but David's last paragraph, Facebook being all about people but not about selling-things/entertaining/helping-find-information is disingenuous. Facebook is all about sucking in people's attention, so they can sell ads. They want to suck as much information about people as possible; entertain you as much as possible with mindless video and photo sharing. There is nothing wrong with a business making money. David shouldn't delude himself and others into believing Facebook is holier than almost any other business. I guess, he has to keep up the pretenses as an exec. sigh!

These are not rumors. Multiple news sources reported the misconduct and Andy had to take a leave of absence from Essential. Andy would have hired a stellar law firm to protect his reputation against defamation, if there was no truth to this. When the credibility he built in his lifetime is at stake, it would be naive assume otherwise.

Edit: I personally admire what he was able to accomplish in mobile but was disappointed when I first heard the new about his mis-conduct. He showed poor judgement, and I didn't expect this of him.

No one really knows why he left Google. Was he forced to leave silently with support for good optics around his departure by Google or he just left abruptly dropping everything he built till then on his own volition. Execs like him just don't drop everything and leave at once without a good transition plan and thinking things through. No one knows the real story. He had to step down from Essential for a valid reason which they can never disclose in all honesty. All we know is that, it has something to do with the reasons why he left Google. The real reasons for his departure is shrouded in secrecy and probably protected or kept a secret with a lot of legalease...

Edit: A quick google search says he left Google because of misconduct. Inappropriate sexual relationship with a subordinate.

I would be curious to see the list of employees who quit for this purpose. They are making a statement. They might as well publicly disclose their identities to inspire more people.

Also, wondering. Are most of them financially independent to have made this decision? When money is not an worry, people have freedom to truly align themselves externally with their internal core values. If you are constantly worried paying rent or securing your kids future - people make compromises. That is not ideal to build a great society.

Walmart was forced to pay $15 Billion by Amazon, I think. Amazon-India is already a force to reckon with in India. They have a ton of customer love in India, and they are killing it. There is no reason for them to buy Flipkart. They did the required to hurt their competitor by feigning interest. Bezos is a master at deception. Well played, Bezos and Flipkart investors. Stingy Walmart has to cough up more money.

This response from Tesla comes across as cold and shows no empathy to the victim's family. "We are very sorry for the family's loss" sounds so hollow after reading the rest of the statement. Does Tesla needs to give such strong public statement against the victim and his family? What is the point? Tesla is euphemistically saying - "Driver was stupid. Sorry but not really." This statement is really hurtful for the family and friends who got affected by this tragedy. Grow some heart Tesla. I am probably asking too much from a faceless corporation.

The title is click-baity. He took leave of absence from the current company Essential because reports of an in-appropriate relationship at Google surfaced publicly?

Leaders and board at Essential seem to be aware of his relationship at Google prior to the press reports. So, it is not clear why is this suddenly a big deal and requires leave of absence. Are they embarrassed that they got publicly caught and doing this for optics? What are they embarrassed about?

Interesting that branding is not important/creatively skirted when negative news is involved. Doesn't come as a surprise. Wondering, if this is intentional. Difficult to imagine that the company is spoon feeding an NY times reporter the headlines. Always saw SoFi everywhere in ads and branding. Social Finance on Google doesn't rank SoFi in the top two organic search results. Wonder why the headline is Social Finance instead of SoFi though there is mention of SoFi in the article.

This is only way VC firms can be motivated to actively punish the bad actors. Unless, it hurts their dealflow, they are not incentivized to act. Pledges and warnings' only go so far.

I am assuming the access to this list will be tightly guarded. So the only way to protect the women of the valley from these VCs is by having a partner friend at YC who will look up the list for you and give yay/nay answers?

Wow thanks for sharing this. Read Viji's story. Truly inspiring that she was determined to fight cancer, finish her PhD, do great work, find a spouse who would marry her fully aware that cancer would consume her eventually, and support her research. What a great story!

I hope this picture becomes a symbol of inspiration to all girls worldwide that they are equals when it comes to excelling at STEM. We all need to actively promote the right kind of imagery and narrative around us to build a world where women are empowered are to go after STEM careers, and never ever feel that they won't be able to do better than men.

I have built quite a bit of karma on this account and using it as my default id now. Also, what matters is the value of ideas not who it is coming from - right? :)
