I'm the same way I like paypal to mask this. However some credit cards now have "virtual cards" that give you a temporary online number that you can use for specific transactions. It's another great way to avoid your data getting out there. I use one from Citibank as I have a CC from them.

I highly recommend that instead of Paypal too if you suspect a site will have a much higher chance you'll need to reverse a charge. Paypal has longer wait times for disputes than the CC companies. CC companies will also have your back a bit more, typically.

Is the boss a programmer? If yes, then yeah you should say something. If not, then this is all just normal - this is what bosses do - get credit for their division and get more funding for it. If he is not a programmer, then of course the board knows he didn't build it and had it built. Even if the sketches were shitty - he was in charge of getting the right people to build it.

The thing that killed craigslist was a bunch of startups that took it's ideas and charged 5% for the transaction and lip service about how it is safer than "other platforms" (other platforms being craigslist).

That's the link I used to learn it, it's available online from that link for free. If you look at the CRC - it's an easy read, designed that way on purpose. Chapters are streamlined and much shorter, reads much faster. It's not quite a how-to guide there's definitely some challenges.

you can't get past permits and inspections without building to code. the main builder does not need to be a GC or have any kind of contractor license what-so-ever. There are still some pesky laws in the way, but it can be overcome with some fixes to red tape.

Definitely will be worked out, and I wouldn't be surprised if a startup shows up to get people motivated (with advice, resources and planning assistance) and help them find investment.

People that are less fortunate are going to start getting investment together to buy raw land, build a house and sell it for upwards of the salary of an AI developer at Google.

It's a really really weird space that didn't really exist in 1984. I would say that today's "engineers" below the 80% salary threshold for this space are today's "construction workers" and heavily democratic voters (There are also of course "construction workers" too, of course).

Maybe about 5 years ago I would have said that people making 200k are wealthy. Today I would say that they are a lot of people that have been duped into a lifestyle where they "think" they are wealthy but are not. They spend MOST of their salary on non-essential and non-asset building things. So in a sense they are people that should be rich, but are not. Instead they don't own property (renters) buy lattes, restaurant food (for every meal) and the rest of that income is just going to payments - the tesla, rv/campers/boats, storage facilities for the stuff that doesn't fit in the apartment.

Those people certainly could become winners of the economic system if they stopped paying everyone else - but they identify with wealthy people making 400k but have absolutely no appreciating assets (ok except for their self driving module that Elon duped them into - which it turns out isn't actually "sellable" to the next owner anyway!).

I don't think these people identify with working class - instead they are pushing a narrative for themselves as poor to feel less guilty about that large salary and how poorly it's being pissed away.

That's the closest I can "explain" that from my personal perspective at least.

At 35 I decided to fuck the "normal life" and just go RVing with my wife. We saw the country (US). Fast forward 7 years and we are now building our own house paycheck to paycheck. It's a beautiful property. I know there are people on here that have much, much more and could afford to buy an already existing house. But my dreams are to have a different kind of life, so in that sense I am definitely living that. Yes there are mornings I wish I can wake up and NOT want to install my own well pump, install mini splits in 105 degree weather, install siding, dig foundations, run 40 80-pound bags of cement in a mixer, 2 at a time. etc etc etc...

But my alternative life would have been spending the last 7 years playing new versions of Call of Duty and kinda pissing time away.

Set up a website that lets you buy these people a round-trip plane ticket to CA. That gets around both issues. If the doctor says there's no baby, then no money.

I think most of the comment was just fine. The second phrase of the first sentence (not planning on ever owning) probably pissed people off and didn't add to the discussion. It's ok to not want products from companies. But it's mostly inflammatory to reduce the entirety of a company to a weird clause written in the warranty that was just some lawyer thing.

For anyone that uses XML stuff in Java, you are probably aware of String.intern memory and performance issues. I don't know if that stuff persists today, but a ton of XML parsing goes through that method.

It's the same with everything else in this world. People tell others to go to the doctor, dentist, get an electrician, a contractor. It's all bullshit. Go on youtube, investigate all options, execute. Everything is pennies on the dollar and you will feel better.

This is the truth: We get usefulness and simplicity from complexity. The more useful AND simple you need something to be, the more complex it actually is.

In practice perhaps a major push for solar/wind/geothermal would be a higher-ROI solution to our problems, but that's politically much harder to get consensus on.

The most awesome thing you get from Solar is that it's going to move forward no matter what. It's just something you can do to lower your bill, or even disconnect from the grid altogether. Personally I am off grid with no propane. Almost unheard of in CA. Solar is now THAT cheap if you are willing to put the up-front investment instead of paying PGE $600 a month. And if you don't have the space - buy a solar panel on a business from that other company they are starting - it was on here a week or so ago.

Sounds like Microsoft's Onedrive is the way to go.
