At least China is being consistent: they do not give a single f*ck about intellectual property or copyright…but they also give away all this distilled knowledge away for free.

I’m not an American so I don’t particularly like the idea of giving an American cartel of AI companies having so much power over this technology.

All the car headlights for new cars in Canada are LED and it makes driving at night painful and dangerous. So many times I’ve been nearby blinded by them and I can’t see anything ahead. And it actually physically causes me pain.

I primarily use Opus for my day to day and I /clear often. 1M context sound great but it quickly degrades once you start hitting the 50% mark. I usually just /clear once I hit between 30 and 40 percent context and get much better results from the model. Compaction doesn’t really help much in my experience, starting fresh and having the model front load its context from scratch works much better IME. I have multiple skills with a pile of markdown docs organized by feature to assist in that first load by telling it where to find relevant information for the task. Works great.

I despise this era we live in. Pushing rewrites like this upon millions of users, when the Bun rewrite has countless known issues and is likely a security nightmare. Every time I ‘brew outdated’ and I see a wall of updates I die a little inside knowing that most of this code has not been verified or even looked at. Yet we hear about massive supply chain attacks pretty much every week now and we’re still full steam ahead on this vibe coded nightmare. God help us. Claude Code in particular updates sometimes multiple times per day. Like I’m sorry but there is no way all this nonsense is safe.

Installing drivers and software for connected hardware is just something Windows has done through Windows update for a long time.

Is this a good practice? I don’t really know. We used to get drivers on CDs, but barely anyone has a drive on their computer anymore. You could download them from the vendor website but these are usually a mess and very difficult to navigate to find the right thing — impossible for your grandma.

Could do like Linux and just build trusted software right into the kernel - but then people will complain about bloat.

Deadlines are being missed because we need to spend more time fixing slop? That’s a planning (management) problem, not mine. Management are the ones that forced everyone to write all code with AI now they are grtting what they asked for. I don’t care what date you promised the customer with absolutely no data to back it up that isn’t my problem.

I’m grateful I’m in a position to be able to do this but the way to deal with slop is zero tolerance. Be as ruthless as a Terminator. Though you will need to grow a backbone and stand your ground or it will break you.

My own videogame playing has changed drastically in the last year or so. I used to go from one AAA $80 slop movie game to the next, but lately I’ve been hunting down recent-ish ports and collections of old arcade games (primarily bullet hell shmups but also Beat’em Ups and Run n Guns too) and really diving deep into them and dedicated a lot of trying getting better at them to really test my skill at these games. I never used to play games for score but a lot of these modern ports now have online leaderboards, so I’ve started to try and it’s crazy how much these games open up when you start playing them “as intended” by the developer. Seemingly simple games with few mechanics all of a sudden feel absolutely endless in their depth. These old school arcade developers wanted your quarters but holy man they knew how to design good games. Even simple, seemingly rudimentary, games like Pac-Man have been eureka moments for me once they’ve been blown open for scoring.

Watching an LLM play these for my entertainment would just be weird. I watch YouTube videos of world record score plays but not realy for entertainment, more like for study.

Real Thing is going to come from a major breakthrough. I’m talking about competition amongst models. Difference between Fable and GPT Sol Ultra is so minor the only thing that really matters is that GPT is cheaper.

Hell, difference between Opus and Fable isn’t that big. I would still prefer Opus for most task because it’s cheaper. Break things down into smaller tasks and create deterministic parts of the process and you need the more expensive models less and less.

Anthropic needs to get their token efficiency under control or they will lose long term.

We work with Rails but there is more to programming (and Ruby) than work. Sinatra micro services were a thing for a while. Hanami is decent. But the reason we use Rails is pretty simple…it’s great, easy to onboard developers, it’s battle tested, well maintained and has a massive ecosystem.

meh, models are mostly good enough now. Without a major breakthrough the only thing that matters now is cost.

What social upturn do you expect because robots will still be coding and making art as well as folding laundry.

How will I buy a robot maid if I don’t have a job because a robot does it? These robot maids will be doing manual labour jobs before I can just buy one for myself. So who will be left to buy thing at all?

Maybe I will take up watchmaking when I get sick of AI slop programming and offshore morons going wild with a Claude subscription.

AI was supposed to do my laundry so that I could make art and code for fun but now the AI is coding and making art while I do laundry.

Weird. Coding isn’t really “solved” - because “coding” isn’t just the process of typing in characters as fast as possible - BUT the skill floor has been massively lowered while also raising the skill ceiling considerably.

We’re doing projects now that seemed impossible before because we have access to these powerful AI models. They can make things that would have taken weeks or months take days now, freeing up time for even more ambitious buildouts we never would’ve even considered before.
