Taiwan was under Ming and then Qing Dynasty rule during many of those years.
Taiwan also has indigenous people that were colonized.

Check out the 1967 Hong Kong protests. The UK directed their appointed governor to suppress the protests.
Over 50 protestors were killed and hundreds more injured.
