No. According to me there is probably a middleground.

You can't have it both ways that you don't want a child next to you and just expect parents to spend extra money to accommodate you.

There has to be some kind of middle ground here, imo. Nobody wants to sit next to kids. Families don't want to be penalized financially anymore than they already are for providing a benefit to society. We don't need to further disincentivize families and further our declining birth rates. At the same time it's wildly unfair to ask people to switch seats when they've paid for them (or even if they haven't).

And I'll smile back knowing you're about to have a really great flight with my 3 year old :)

(to be clear, I don't do this personally and pay extra to sit together but I do hope people start parking their kids all over the plane since that's what we all seem to want! It's tempting.)

Then don't whine when you're sitting next to a 3 year old that has all the same justifications you do for sitting there. I don't appreciate social pressure to make your flight as comfortable as possible at my financial inconvenience.

It was my favorite game from childhood. I remember finding it in an Office Max store. They had PC titles on a shelf high up. I actually played the game having no idea there was a movie/book associated with it.

I couldn't guess if it did well commercially, but I know I wasn't the only kid that had it.

I haven't looked into this issue in detail and was surprised to see such a brazen threat so I wanted to find information on your quote "comply or there will be consequences". I'm not able to see that in the context of white house or twitter. I haven't found anything close to it yet.

It features a panda named Stillwater who tells this story (among others) in it.

I agree with you but it's an awkward set of criteria:

- Change your mind when new information is given, that is thinking for yourself.

- Don't change it too much, that is not thinking for yourself.

- Not changing your mind is also not thinking for yourself.

It isn't but I think it can be. In my rural part of the southeast I see more and more people making better food choices (myself included). Maybe the person interviewed is taking the long view of that trend.

There's too many factors for drawing lines. In wealthy countries laws ensuring a higher age for employment makes more sense. In really impoverished countries where there isn't enough money for a family to feed themselves I don't really think a nine year old would prefer to starve rather than work.

I worked jobs around the neighborhood at 12 but that's obviously a lot easier than 10 hour shifts in a field (as the article suggests). I don't know what's right and I'm thankful I don't have to make the decisions.

My grandfather told me a version of this story and I have been lucky to tell my kids (who loved it).

Our version:

There was once a boy that was born with a golden screw where his belly button should be. This made him very self-conscious about it. The kids at school would tease him about his golden screw and lack of belly button. It was so bad that he didn't want to remove his shirt when swimming.

One day his class took a field trip to the beach. The boy didn't want to remove his shirt, so he walked along the beach kicking the sand. He was very sad. Suddenly, his foot hurt from kicking something hard in the sand. He looked down and discovered a golden screwdriver.

His eyes brightened and he felt this must be some divine intervention. He immediately removed his shirt, grabbed the golden screwdriver and began to carefully unscrew the golden screw. This was the moment. He unscrewed it and finally this golden screw that had cursed him his whole life came out <dramatic pause> then his butt fell off.

<cue 6 year old laughing>

The way you describe it sounds like a micro trickle-down wealth redistribution rather than making sure someone has a fair wage.

Personally I find this really frustrating. You're not paid fairly for your labor. You only achieve a living wage through the generosity of those "happy to help boost" me. In my mind that reinforces a power dynamic between the "professionally successful" and those in the service industry. If I get a tip that raises my wage to something I can live off, now I must be profusely thankful to the person that donated their money to me.

I may be isolated in that opinion. I understand many service industry workers prefer tipping. For my personality though it's distressing.

Just an anecdote but where I live we've had a huge influx of ex-Floridians moving in. They are all over this town. I was thinking there was an exodus going on.

There's even a name for all the people that move to Florida from northern states and realize they don't care for it: Halfbacks (halfway back to New York, MA, anywhere NE).

The cultural difference doesn't seem like something to "cringe" over. I also don't think the hyperbolic use is restricted to the US. Pretty much any english speaking country will use "insane" to describe something with emphasis. Certainly normal in the UK and Australia.

Also, why are cause and remediation efforts important to you?

Because I have to provide information to others in my company about why X is not doing Y. These bits of information help.

If you rely on the service and it goes out, what more are you going to learn here that would help you?

Roughly the same answer - though I'm also just actively curious what's going on as well in the moment.

Why not just check those status pages?

I do. HN often has more information.
