Cool idea but very buggy

None of the voice controlled devices I've ever used have been a pleasant experience (Google, Siri, various others). I don't think the tech is there yet personally.

They might have it down for certain english accents but even as a native speaker, their success rate is probably about 25% for me.

On a related note, iPhone's dictation just took a huge step backwards with the new iOS release.

The "running from a single box" at the end seems like it could be the most important part of the equation. Would you agree? Or rather, would that be the recommended place to start optimizing if your app runs into scaling problems?

Could you elaborate on why it is a pain to deploy? I've never used Meteor but I thought one of the selling points is ease of deploy, hot code pushes, stuff like that.

It's true. Their convoluted billing schemes belong in the "mislead the customer for great profit!" hall of fame, right up there with insurance providers.

Btw that is why I use the somewhat pretentious sounding "Written on my tablet" or "Written on my phone" in email signatures on devices like that in hopes that people will re-attribute typos that might otherwise reflect poorly. But it is still a good idea to proof read written communication of any significant value...

It's a framework. If you don't want to spend much time customizing it, your site will look like everyone else's who made the same choice. But it is very easy to customize and themes are becoming prevalent too.

Intrusive: Depends on how sensitive you are about stuff like this. They're only going to be screening flights from the worst hit West African countries. It's a temperature check before you get on the flight, and another one after. We've had way more intrusive security measures in place for EVERY person flying in the past (and present).

Expensive: More expensive than not doing it, sure. There's only about ~150 people entering the U.S. daily from the Liberia+Sierra Leone+Guinea. The screens will be performed using digital thermometers. The cost should be relatively low.

Demonstrably Irrational: It's not really irrational to take the potential for public hysteria surrounding this issue very seriously. If people believe that we're just letting at-risk people travel freely between W. Africa and the United States then things are going to get very nasty the moment Patient 1 shows up (P0 died a few days ago). CDC (Frieden) admits that the checks might make people feel safer but the real focus needs to be on containment in Africa. Everything else is going to be a half measure by comparison.

In the United States, a public hysteria would likely do more damage than the virus itself so this is a good idea even if it is just security theatre. I've heard that phrase uttered several times in this thread already. Do you guys all read the same libertarian blog or something?

It's about to be flu season. They don't want hospitals to be overcrowded with paranoid patients because that means if somebody actually does have the virus they're less likely to get the proper attention. Etc. Not to mention all the people suffering from other problems. Such a strain on our healthcare system must be avoided at all costs.

Because fear (especially of death) makes people do highly irrational things. You could argue that it actually isn't irrational to lie in order to get into a 1st world country with 1st world hospitals. From a very selfish perspective of preservation, that is actually pretty rational.

It started as a way of annotating rap lyrics to explain the content to the uninitiated. Unfortunately, many of these annotations are flat-out wrong (not to mention many of the subject matters are more or less open to interpretation). So right off the bat, the whole notion of calling the platform "Genius" is highly dubious, I feel. Not sure why they think that they can easily expand out into other mediums which will require more, not less, intense analytical thought, intimate knowledge about the subject, etc. as opposed to just being knowledgable about what mostly amounts to slang.

So the original product has now morphed into some sort of "global" annotation system for any kind of text (including literature, law, tech). I just feel like they will have a hard time attracting true experts in these subjects.

A lot of this stuff is kind of... uh... drivel? Eg. sure, tons of companies would like to hire "only A players" But that isn't realistic. In my opinion, Genius is not as compelling of a product to work on as they seem to think. They got big basically via appropriating rap culture. The bit about your job title not mattering because ultimately the success of Genius depends on you is nice on the surface but instantly problematic after you start to think about it a little bit.
