Are you me? Our services with all the best practices are also the worst to work on because the business value is hidden in layers and layers of indirection, abstraction and nested packages. It’s like someone took a recipe card to bake a cake and wrote each word on a single page (because god forbid we ever repeat ourselves) and then abstracted away a function behind a series of factories and interfaces that will join those pages with string, and now each word has a single context-less definition so we can tick the “S” box in SOLID.

You were frustrated the customer didn't pay you an arbitrary amount to live off based on their mood instead of frustrated that your boss didn't pay you a legally mandated amount to live off.

right, but then so does support - by making sure that your customers are happy and therefore recommend your brand and become repeat customers. so do your cleaners - by making the workplace a tidier building so that your other staff are more productive. every team ultimately is there to "facilitate" another team to work better and make more money.

SOMEONE will end up managing the team that adds value to the company. I think the point is to play the politics & turf battles so that YOU are that someone.

Really? There are a lot of jobs that could be automated. If you are writing software with the goal of improving current processes, sometimes you can get a better result by looking at WHY the process exists, and if it could be replaced entirely.
An example: Self driving cars will eventually put Taxi Drivers out of jobs. Does that mean a Start-up that wants to be in this industry is evil? I don't think so.
I think this in the same vein as "We don't interview a psychic every time there is a murder".
If you want the BBC to be unbiased, then you could make the argument they have previously being biased towards climate change denial, given that a 50/50 interview on TV is not representative of the ratio of scientists who believe/don't believe in climate change.
Trade Me has been gamed though, by importers and people using it as a virtual store for selling or trading their niche. I'm not sure what the answer is, but a way to filter out the high-volume sellers would be nice.

That is, because of the complexity of the project, there was always something that was missed or broken - although it could have been as simple as a bulb that was backlighting a switch might be blown, or a cupboard might have been restocked incorrectly, or a calculation for external events might be slightly off.
