Tab ordering is messed up. Tab scrolling is bugged. Everything from before requires more taps than before. Pages randomly render blank. Normal and private mode gets stuck and next intent tab is opened on whatever mode was explicitly opened before.

I would count the bullshit extension whitelist as the single biggest regression. But it is not new, so its not counted as such anymore?

The worst part, I will still be using Firefox because of my principles. Mozilla knows that userbase like me isn't leaving, and those unlike me aren't staying. It doesn't matter how big of a screwup they cause next time. The writing is already on the wall.

Language specific IDEs are less because Language Server Protocol solved this real problem. We converged on a good enough solution.

But unlike IDEs and programming language support, note-taking is inherently personal. There is no one-size fits all. I am more disorganized than otherwise, but I prefer separate tools for separate occasions. I like pen and paper for quick jot-downs and napkin math, notepad++/Sublime for quick copy-pastes, OneNote for $DAYJOB and org-mode for long term knowledge base and blogging.

I am sure real people exist who prefer one over the other on more than one occasion.

I mean, why should developers get 70% of the money, right? /s

Non-US, non-Google regular enterprise IT here. There is absolutely zero reason my team needs to be in office. Management has stated multiple time that our productivity has increased. And yet, our official WFH policy keeps getting extended on the last day the government regulates an extension.

Overall it has left a very sour taste in my mouth, it almost feels as if we will be called in office the moment gov removes restrictions. It also tells me my company doesn't want us making any medium term plans. In another words, we are expendable.

And I just realised why I prefer to read HN on mobile. The Hews app in particular has fantastic flow to churn giant multi-threaded conversations. The desktop website, in comparison feels like designed for reading every single comment.

That also happened with NixOS. But then again, not really surprising for something that breaks FHS.

How about a learned behavior? Windows update has burned with enough times with unusable system that I am now trained to not trust it. "up"date isn't the word I'd use for it. And before you say that doesn't happen anymore, Microsoft has been saying this and repeating it for 2+ decades.

Its not the users that are bad at updating. It is Microsoft.

The developer also pays. By giving Google their entire viewer/user base, so Google knows whom to target if they decide to create an alternative.

If its all Turing complete, I see no reason why it can't be possible, theoretically speaking.

I'll try to explain how I git where I am with this.

I used the same Google keep as you for multiple years, but Keep isn't available offline on PC, it's interface doesn't help in interlinking, and it is not open source. Last one hurts especially considering its a Google project, one of the decent ones at that, and thus it can always be cancelled next quarter.

I moved in to Emacs+org-mode on PC, and Orgzly/Orgro on Android. It syncs notes via syncthing, on my lan, no internet required, but can be used. This gives it a ruledundancy. Org-mode is also much Kore organic for note taking, since it allows collapsing trees, embedding code, equations. Adding links can be done inline, unlike Keep (I haven't used it in last year so that may have changed).

As for search, Keep is good enough if your notes only have shopping lists and one off stuff that you require every now and then. Keep is, however, terrible for organizing any amount of knowledge. Org-rifle, for eg. gives context aware search results across my entire notes folder. The power is unmatched by Keep, where notes are mostly siloes, and interface too verbose to let you a birds eye view.

And did I mention Keep takes multiple seconds to load on a good connection? And that its closed source? For some, that alone is reason enough.

+1. NixOS benefits especially, because a broken kernel/nvidia update never renders your system unusable. You can make changes to all your heart's desire, and if something does break, all you have to do is reboot and select previous configuration

AIUI, 'Nice to have' in this case is in relation to 'technical feasibility' rather than actual useability. Cameras and modems are two notoriously closed down parts of modern smartphones, and thus it follows they are the most difficult if not downright impossible to support properly.

That's a good one. I was thinking of this as well. Would you point me towards some good courses or books as a starting point?
