One issue in hi-fi audio is the surprising lack of good source material given the passage of time.

For example - 20 years ago it feels like you could by a SACD with some classical music on it - and the quality was pretty darn impressive. I remember multi-channel audio in these.

Despite 20 years of tech - when I try to stream or even buy some multi-channel audio for my HiFi rig it's basically super annoying as far as I can tell. No clear disclosure of actual channels / format etc.

Am I missing something? SACD had 5,000+ titles out, you could just grab one and it worked.

What's the current approach here for high quality multi-channel audio?

My home setup is Klipsch 5.1 if that matters, but I'm happy if things play 3.1 if needed.

You have a 60x EV Range breakthrough - and you are still a small company not snapped up by some monster. How in the HELL is that possible. 60x range is 20,000 miles for the tesla Model 3. How is this amount of energy even carried safely?

I've become jaded to these announcements. Glad someone is coming out with a checkbox for them.

Note that for EV's COST has become a key driver - 315 miles range is "good enough" if you get to leave your house every morning with a full charge. Hopefully the 60X improvement creating this "range breakthrough" translates into a 60x cost reduction given you can use a much smaller battery for the 315 miles.

Most just grab location data from your cell phone which is already tracked.

Same experience - I also went all in on tile - it really does not have the density of reporting and I'm also pretty sure lacks privacy protections apple has.

1) Where would you put it, there are already TONS of options for wifi / bluetooth / audio etc. This is where I would expect it.

2) You can just disable this stuff when you first get your phone it walks you through these prompts there. If you don't enable it - it is not enabled.

3) Spam should be opt-in - most people don't want it. But a lot of Apple stuff should be opt-out, because people do want it. Ie, turn on GPS / location features - folks really want weather, maps with turn by turn etc. Apple already over prompts on setup for my tastes.

Perfect - this is exactly what I want vs paying $15K.

Running errands, no need to it. But I drive to clients and other longer trips, this is game changing if I could go full hands off and work during that time.

Uber runs about $100/hr I think - so if I could use my own car and not have to take uber (I often take uber precisely so I can work) then it's perfect. If price is 1/10th of the the marginal cost even better.

I've actually worked in govt systems. If you think the whole endless threats of jail make for more secure systems you are truly clueless.

These systems are RIDDLED with the WORST outdated crap you can imagine. Absolute insane hoop jumping so plenty of pressure to work around security just to get jobs done (seriously - start with the help desk if you want access - they are so used to password resets the procedures become a joke - literally - what's the username and that's it, because if you have thousands of folks on 30 day password rotations with insane complexity all you do is password resets endlessly). Password sharing can also be crazy so passwords float all over.

The govt has had it's top stuff leaked. Office of personnel management leaked insanely sensitive stuff. They contract with the WORST folks in security. It's really crazy.

Google has never asked me to rotate my password. I have non-SMS two factor authentication options, they do pretty sophisticated rate and geo monitoring so you are not annoyed but pretty secure.

Cyberattacks, mechanical failures, weather disasters, meteor strikes, terrorist bombs, stupid construction workers ALL could affect this pipeline. People on HN have no risk perspective. Make the system resilient to a proactive few day outage. Why does this system have to run 365 / 24 / 7? Have you mitigated EVERY possible issue - including disgruntled employees? No - then instead of over doing one corner, design some give in the system.

Their approach makes a lot of sense. Corp network hacked - so to be careful shut down pipeline until you've really made sure that you are fully safe pipeline side as there now may be more attack vectors.

Do android handset makers do these notifications? I mean - it's very likely that a LOT of chinese apps in particular (which these were) may have security holes, including ones that are there for govt purposes.

Did the directly affected companies do the notifications?

I thought Apple had sort of a separate setup in china (data center etc) to mitigate some of the issues there impacting the rest of their user base.

Huh? This wasn't an apple hack. This was developers using counterfeit xcode I believe, and those developers apps were then hacked using non-genuine development tools.

The lesson here is that it's probably important to do things like the non-apple battery warnings etc because the scammers and hackers will not stop attacking the platform.

Isn't there a trademark infringement risk to put the AWS brand as the lead item? I'm surprised AWS approves of that vs the more common for AWS model for third parties targeting AWS. But great to hear AWS have such a relaxed view. The legal side would probably throw a fuss over this type of thing.

Most of the issues with Bird and Lime were caused by the anti-scooter groups. Seriously, your office worker is not throwing them off into bodies of water and parking structures.

The irony is despite all this right to repair stuff, apple makes some of the more long lasting devices in terms of usability. Their software updates keep coming, their phones are actually surprisingly waterproof (plenty of great rescue stories here). If you have parents who are older, you know how this works - they keep their devices much longer in my experience.

Yes, they glue the crap out of everything, solder stuff down instead of hacking bigger sockets and plug in chips with pins etc so do everything they are not supposed to. But the end result is darn long lasting and useful.

If someone thinks users will trade out for these right to repair devices go for it. Android has TONS of folks playing in that space. But I'd say let Apple try things there way - a phone that just maintains great resale value because it's a bit harder to get screwed buying one - it alerts you if the scammers swap out the battery for a crap one even which used to be one annoying issue buying used iphones that made me stop buying used.

With the billions amazon and apple sell you think they would be automating their warehouses more. Ie, pick steps at least - particularly given the description of Amazon warehouses as "hell holes" relative to other warehouse and physical labor jobs (small owner run construction / warehouse / autobody can also have horrendous discrimination / harassment etc stuff, but perhaps better than the amazon alternative?).

I've seen restaurant owners hire folks to hit on them in particular. Maybe an industry thing? Music / film ideally doesn't have that issue but less exposure to that world.

I know you are not supposed to blanket block foreign IP's, but I often do that and it seems to knock down a fair bit of crap. Also saves you from inadvertently messing up GPDR.

I totally agree with this. iMessage as a stand alone business would be super valuable. WhatsApp is valuable because so many people use it. Chase the network effect or it will crush you.

Worst cast make people pay for some apple services to get iMessage if you really want to. They really are repeating RIM's mistake here.

My wife is now on Google Duo because it IS cross platform. WhatsApp and Telegram as well. These messaging networks are natural monopolies. So now I am on Duo etc. I just wish her parents could have installed iMessage on their phones - then apple could have charged us all $5/month for some type of family (10 person) plan.

It seems very unlikely that Exxon can be sued by folks living overseas in US courts for things govt members (members of their military) were involved in to benefit exxon, or am I not following this?

China clears and relocates folks all the time, I've never heard of those folks being able to sue in the US even if the removals benefit a US company.
