I am sure people's thoughts on this reflect their current boss/leadership.

I would have disagreed 2 years ago but got a new boss last year that seems to make huge business decisions based on a random number generator.

The problem is whatever advances we make they just quickly become viewed as a natural given by the historically ignorant.

It wasn't that long ago that 30% of children died before age 1. Imagine having a baby and there is a 30% chance it is dead in a year? That is almost all of human history.

The complaint will remain constant no matter what. If everyone owned a BMW some people would complain there is this aristocratic class that has a 7 series while the peasants all own 3 series and that we need to make things more equal.

We are so equal that the richest man in history and a homeless person practically have the same smart phone.

Isn't it time to move on from Freudian language and stop using a word that has so many different meanings in the modern sense?

If we translated things today for the first time we would never translate these ideas to the word 'ego'. I am pretty sure this is just a relic of the times of original translation and Freud's popularity at the time.

I just remember being young and thinking the idea was to quite your personality or destroy your personality. That is such a translation error and distortion of the message. A philosophical problem caused by highly imprecise language.

I think of Mortal Kombat at the arcade before there was any version to play at home.

Nothing can ever compete with that. The finishing moves were like this occult knowledge that you would see certain kids have and think of them as some kind of martial arts masters. No internet to tell you how to do them. Would just have to try to watch the master and figure out what they were doing when they did the finishing move.

Scarcity of game play the coin created along with having to be social at the arcade. Just an awesome experience as a kid.

Oh yes. I love pancakes with just melted butter. A giant butter sponge.

If anything else I put honey on them. Maple syrup is just a total ripoff price wise.

My go to cheat meal really with sausage.

"But others say Loeb is tarnishing astronomy and undermining the search for extraterrestrial intelligence"

I mean I think this is all nonsense but the idea someone doesn't have the correct credentials to produce scientific evidence is so distasteful.

We must first put on our properly powdered wig, dance the minuet, then and only then is one capable of collecting UFO evidence!

Seems pretty obvious to me that we are going backwards.

I always worried about this stage of my life as a non-software engineer that I would get lapped by the younger generation who had been immersed in technology since birth.

Smart phone immersion though not only seems useless but counter productive. No computer skills or attention span. At least I got a ton of computer skills while my attention span was shortened.

Is this going to change with Generation Covid? That seems like an easy bet no.

It seems to me the philosophical mistake is that banking and financial system regulations came about randomly. As if these are just unintended software bugs. As if there was no reason for the regulations.

So all this complexity to get around regulations but you are going to run into the reasons this regulation came about at some scale.

Oh yea...we didn't think of that...oops.

Surely, that problem will just scale with time, adoption and law suits.

This is all such an unbelievable waste of intellectual resources to re-invent the wheel

Come on, both Mitchell and Young will be trying to get back on Spotify in less than 2 years if that.

The irony to me is they are just too old to know about all the rap songs glorifying drinking lean during an opioid epidemic. Not even misinformation about lean, actively promoting.

That is not happening for me.

This is all easy to solve if you get up early and then never stay up late.

I can't stay up late on Friday and Saturday, sleep in on Sunday and then expect to not have my sleep schedule altered to get up early during the week.

This is easy to do once you are old. If you are young with a social life I really have no idea.

What annoys me is that if you wanted to see as few people in the US get vaccinated as possible, the best way would be to constantly tell people to get vaccinated and make a big political issue out of it.

The people I know that are not vaccinated have nothing against vaccines. They are just the type that if you tell them what to do then that is exactly what they are not going to do.

The most interesting thing I have heard from Sinclair is the studies on mice that eating once a day was what extended lifespan the most. Everything else was not that important diet wise.

It sounds like to me the method is eat once a day and get in the best physical condition possible from working out. Beyond that, I am just not going to stress about it. Surely, not going to take any reverse risk with HGH or experimental drugs.

It is so bizarre to believe we have epistemological certainty in what we currently know that anyone should be shut up about anything.

It is literally the feature of our system that lays the golden eggs that there is no such thing as a heretical thought.

Nonsense like qanon are the waste products of 100% open mindedness but you can't have it both ways. You will just end up with endless super hero movies in all realms of thought. A process that is already well under way.

The problem is I think there is a bias created when we still call our hand held computers that can make telephone calls, "phones".

There is just not that many situations that a VR headset is a better UI than a hand held computer.

The opposite is actually true. If everyone was using VR headsets then it would be obvious that the hand held computer is the next big thing. You are finally free to not have to wear this goofy headset and still do 99% of what you would have done outside of gaming in VR.

The fitness apps are the most absurd thing. No one that is serious about fitness is working out for any length of time with a headset on.

If you could go to a real virtual gym and lift virtual weights that was no different than lifting real weights, that would be amazing. That would be revolutionary because so many problems would have to be solved.

Instead, the headset has literally solved nothing in the last 30 years. There is a video of Jaron Lanier on youtube showing a vr headset and vr glove in 1990. It could literally be a VR advertisement next year and you wouldn't know the difference.

IMO we are just in denial that the VR headset has really solved anything.

It is not just what you can do in VR that you can't do in real life but what you can do in VR with missing most of your senses.

I suspect in 50 years people will look at this time in VR as not much different than VRML 20 years ago. Obviously, that was never going to work with the technological limitations of the time.

It is really hard to deliver when the expectation is 'virtual reality'.

Spot on. I think a piano is the best example. No one sits down at the piano and can just rip the first time.

Almost anyone though can learn to play piano if they practice enough. You don't have to be the best in the world either to make good music.

Then there is a huge difference between being a great piano player and being a great composer of music in a creative sense.

Culturally though, I would think we are going backwards. I feel like I would know so much less in this area if I was 25 years younger and grew up with a phone instead of a PC.

It really is what makes our society fascinating.

We have a self conception as a highly rational and high tech society. When it comes to medicine we follow "the science".

Then as a default setting we cut the tip of baby boys penis off for no reason without thinking twice about it.

At the same time viewing the same procedure on a baby girl for the utter barbaric insanity that it is. Something completely unthinkable when living in a a highly rational and high tech society that follows "the science" like we do.

Society being controlled hugely by superstition and nonsense? We are way past those idiots that use to have witch hunts hundreds of years ago. All the experts say so and the experts follow "the science".

What data was it using again? The blood panel your doctor orders every one to two years?

Medical diagnosis is a trivial problem for machine learning to beat humans. Humans are terrible at this.

The problem is there is not even the concept of high frequency medical data. Imagine machine learning in quant stock trading with samples once a year. Of course it isn't going to work.

The problem is all in the externalities. Doctors don't want AI. They can see the automation path and their bank account change down the line quite clearly. Not to mention most doctors don't know anything about data science so how can you have any faith in the algorithm prediction? No one wants to be the test case and then get a law suit. "I was just following what the computer said was correct". Wrong answer, pay up.

The real irony to me is in a 100 years people look at the current medical system as complete quakery. Literally have everything right now to build medical super intelligence but stuck with the human doctors doing the exact same things from 50 years ago.

Machine learning could beat my doctor right now. "Using Random Forest Algorithm for Breast Cancer Diagnosis" https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8644835

Most of what the doctor is doing is a type of modern shamanism though. Person doesn't feel good, so the doctor orders a useless test, test comes back negative so the person feels better. Then we complain health care cost too much.

10 full blood panel samples a year with other bio-metric data and a data set of 20 million people to do classification on would crush the doctor over time.

This bullshit health system though makes it impossible to have any real innovation at a mass scale. We will never have personal higher frequency medical data in my lifetime that would actually hugely improve the system and cut most of the cost out.

What data is being collected on you? Once a year blood test if that even?

I actually suspect it would be trivial to beat my doctor after 5 years of higher frequency full blood panel data collection.

10 full blood panel samples a year, have 20 million people do that for a data set we can do classification on. I think my doctor is kind of out of business then.

Will never happen in my life though with health insurance and health bureaucracy.

I don't drink but I honestly would much rather start drinking than have kids.

I think it was Schopenhauer that said love is nature's way of tricking people into taking on the responsibility of having children.

Yea that was said by no one ever.

I notice this bullshit narrative this past year for every over hyped technology.

"X is just like when everyone was dismissing the internet" even though that never happened.

In the early days of the internet, people were either excited by it or had no clue what you were talking about. No one would ever say they would just stick with the library. Just total nonsense.

Someone saying this is probably too young to have used a card catalog at the library.
