Assuming a deer with 43,000 calories, your math approximates to nearly 2700 calories/person/day, which seems like an awful lot for a family of 4.

And the attitude in your comment toward the program seems to be "Why bother?" But this program:

- connects people together

- provides hormone/antibiotic-free meat

- is low cost

What's wrong with that?

The pedantic negativity on HN towards good things, in comments like yours, is a real bummer.

A deer can feed a family of four for four days. That's all the calories there are in there.

This is so wildly inaccurate that I can't believe you'd make this claim.

You think a 90-150 lb animal has something like 10 lbs of meat on it?

30-60 lbs is much more accurate. Here's a chart from the PA Game Commission: https://www.pgc.pa.gov/Wildlife/WildlifeSpecies/White-tailed...

Why even post if you have no idea what you're talking about? Do you think everyone at the food bank is on the carnivore diet?

To run text-to-speech on my laptop, I've been using Justine Tunney's downloadable single executable Whisper file.

I use it transcribe audio then copy into an LLM to get notes on whatever it is. Helps me decide to watch or listen to something and saves a bunch of time.

1st problem: Scan gun for home center materials did not work as the system was momentarily down.

2nd problem: 2 barcodes on the product.

Not sure which one of these is a "me" problem. You also misread my comment.

Sounds like you just want to throw around low-effort personal insults instead of addressing anything I said. This is HN, you can do better.

I disagree with you.

I've used self-checkout 4 times in 4 different stores in the last week and had a problem 2 out of 4 times. 50% success is not success.

Every store is different:

- Do they weigh stuff in the bagging area?

- Do they scan produce bar codes?

- Does it take cash, or card only?

- Is there annoying lag? (Frequently, yes!)

- Is it going to scan something twice because I hovered, because it lagged?

Also, let me ask:

- Why isn't there space for my cart?

- Why am I juggling stuff in a tiny bagging area?

- Why do the bagging area hooks suck?

- Why is there only one attendant in the stores that have really sucky systems?

- Why are half the self-checkout kiosks closed?

Self-checkout is not made for shoppers. I prefer self-checkout, but I wish good systems were more common.

Here are a few factors:

- Deer populations are increasing.

- There are no winter killoffs due to warming temperatures.

- Invasive plants like Japanese barberry are becoming extremely common and create microclimates that support mice that ticks live on before attaching to deer.

I believe some tick-borne diseases are becoming more common - I know two people that have had babesiosis, and one person and one dog with anaplasmosis. One of the babesiosis cases was not caught by the hospital in the first go-around and required a blood exchange and almost 2 months in the hospital and rehab.

There is a new invasive insect called the deer ked [0] that crawls like the girl from The Ring and may be a new vector for tick diseases (and they fly!).

Highly recommend checking out the CDC on tick-borne diseases [1], using DEET/permethrin [2] (no permethrin with cats, though), and doing tick checks if you spend time outside.

Put your resume up on job sites!

Even not-so-great-sounding contracts pay 50-65/hr, might be a confidence boost. Level up your skills on udemy, if necessary (wait for courses to be 80% off or whatever, happens regularly).

Could also go corporate at a non-tech for low stress and a decent salary.

I like the idea of trying to solve this problem!

Here's an idea:

- Require a photo of the author with a photo of gov-issued id.

- Maybe require a dated piece of paper or a Clarkesworld word-of-the-day in the photo.

- If submitter is from a country with hard-to-get gov-id, or just doesn't have/want it, their submission goes in the extra scrutiny pile.

I'm not too keen on requiring gov id, so maybe someone has a better idea?

I'm pretty sure you just need to increase friction for spammers in meatspace to solve this. I'm not saying this is scalable, but we're just trying to fix it for Clarksworld.

Uh, I think you are confused about Hugo unless I'm missing something.

It's a static site generator and is nothing like Wordpress. I've run Hugo sites behind nginx, caddy, and netlify with nary a problem.

100% agree.

I have a content website with some tables that I compiled from carefully scouring forums, taking my own measurements, and from people emailing me new info.

Well, Google just displays my tables in the search results, so no one needs to visit my site. This may be great for a user, but it's a real disincentive to create content if Google is just going to scrape it and display it.

Last time I looked, my site ranked #1 for the searches above, but a user would have to scroll through 3 screens worth of whatever else is on a search results page now to get to my link.

There was an article here on HN some time ago about some enormous project in California (a bridge? a tunnel?). IIRC the state's engineering department was quite small and underfunded, and so they depended on the contracted company for their engineering expertise. This did not go well. As I recall, the problems were that the state engineers were not experienced enough (because private pays better and seniors leave) and there weren't enough of them. For the life of me, I can't remember what the project was, but maybe someone else here does.

How about small towns entering into agreements with big box stores where they are simply unmatched and "hoodwinked" into accepting arrangements that aren't favorable. [0] Presumably, towns could make better contacts with better legal resources.

Do you have a better solution to this problem or should we just let the corps run our lives?

Ben Valleck has an ultra-approachable video on building your own keyboard [0].

PCBs are incredibly cheap to print (<$25 shipped for me to print at https://jlcpcb.com, IIRC), and he shows you how to do some mods to the schematic using KiCad [1].

BV also has some crazier minimal keyboard designs like this 18-key split one with lots of layers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNOGEtqn85o

This article is useless clickbait.

Exercise and good sleep are far better than some cherry-picked exercises that this article says I need to do, and will have many more benefits. Here are the "Neurobiological effects of physical exercise" from Wikipedia [0]:

The neurobiological effects of physical exercise are numerous and involve a wide range of interrelated effects on brain structure, brain function, and cognition. A large body of research in humans has demonstrated that consistent aerobic exercise (e.g., 30 minutes every day) induces persistent improvements in certain cognitive functions, healthy alterations in gene expression in the brain, and beneficial forms of neuroplasticity and behavioral plasticity; some of these long-term effects include: increased neuron growth, increased neurological activity, improved stress coping, enhanced cognitive control of behavior, improved declarative, spatial, and working memory, and structural and functional improvements in brain structures and pathways associated with cognitive control and memory. The effects of exercise on cognition have important implications for improving academic performance in children and college students, improving adult productivity, preserving cognitive function in old age, preventing or treating certain neurological disorders, and improving overall quality of life.

From what I gather from reading Matt Stoller's newsletter on monopolies, there has been little meaningful enforcement of antitrust for a very long time.

Did you know there's a huge cheerleading monopoly [0]? There is essentially one company that runs the competitions, sells the uniforms, and sells the equipment. A quote from the article:

The most interesting aspect of this case are not the legal arrangements, but the fear that I found in interviewing people in the cheer world. Virtually every interview I did was under the condition that the person remain anonymous for fear of retribution. Often people would email me saying that I had no idea the depths of the scandals in the sport.

How about monopolies in port-a-potties and MMA? [1]

The alternative seems to be that you do...nothing? And just let them keep consolidating a market? That can't be good.

Antitrust needs enforcement so that we can have competition.

Well, yes, I guess. :)

But if the bidet has done its job, then the towels aren't poopy. A lot cleaner than dealing with cloth baby diapers!

Buy plenty of towels and you can spread out the washing a lot more. We do a load every 3-4 weeks probably.
