Ad blocking is a security issue. When web sites start taking responsibility for their ad content, we can have a discussion on if it is "theft" or not. As long as they farm their ads out to third party providers and wash their hands of any of the security implications and responsibilities, I will continue to block them.
Absolutely. If you are a Verizon service provider customer, please call them and register your feelings on this matter. Make sure you let them know in no uncertain terms that you are considering switching providers based on their lack of following best practices.
Every Chinese company is at least partially owned, controlled, or heavily influenced by the Chinese government. It's just a fact of life given their current system of government.
Ask yourself this question. Would you buy an iPhone if the US Government owned a significant part of Apple? Or could shut down Apple at any time they wished? Would you trust them not to provide your information to US law enforcement or other government entities without due process under those conditions?
Then why would you purchase a phone manufactured by a Chinese company given the same circumstances?
It would be nice to see reddit have some sort of memorial. Sadly, I think the "new" reddit finds his memory a bit uncomfortable.

Isn't that kind of the point of hiring an expert?
If you knew the provenance of an item, what it was worth, and how it was obtained, why waste money on hiring an expert?
This might be great for the FBI right up until they actually try to use the evidence in court. The defense attorney can claim (rightly so) that unless they can examine the unlock method to verify it doesn't tamper with any of the data on the phone, the evidence is inadmissible.
The only way the FBI will be able to use this data in court is if they turn the process over to the defense so they can have the process independently verified. Since the article states that they don't have access to the "technical details" of the hack, they have no way to prove the method doesn't manipulate the data on the device.
