I... wow. That you think it's OK to leave a perfectly salvageable marriage (My wife and I get along great. I love her. We have fun together.) when you have (or are primary guardian of) children this attached to you is... Ask yourself, are you a man? Will you accept the responsibilities that have been placed upon you?

(I'm not completely unsympathetic, but I think you need to think harder about the full consequences of your actions on those around you.)

I wouldn't call the first version well factored since "x ^ 2" is repeated. So you could simplify to

    assert square(inp) == square(inp)

You didn't mention the most important people in GP's comment: the children. "we do care full-time for 2 kids" is pretty vague, but it sounds like they probably see you as their parents, at least emotionally.

What effect would this have on them? How would the events unfold in their eyes? Family.... family..... family.... and then: BOOM WTF JUST HAPPENED?

Paraphrasing a memorable quote from one of my favorite blogs:

I use keepassx and yeah it could use some tlc, but overall I consider stability a feature in security software. How does one tell if xc isn't just a bunch of wannabes making keepassx with blackjack and hookers until they break it? At least keepassx has taviso's off-handed Twitter comment that it "looks sane".

I'm the introverted nerdy type - my main interests are programming, playing the piano and physics. But as I was growing up my parents were trying to encourage me and my siblings to be somewhat active for the obvious health reasons. And I stayed on the swim team through freshman year of high school. And I get it. There's more to life than school and books. Being on a sports team can be fun and rewarding, it can push you out of your comfort zone, can help you meet and bond with people not quite like you. I consider it one of my top five life mistakes that I quit the team.

So I disagree that the teams are such a waste of everything. Sure, you could separate the teams from the schools, but especially in the suburbs, why? Logistics are an issue - if you're already at a school how do you get to practice? The school also already has a social structure based on which to organize teams - sure you could create a whole separate structure, and I don't think that's necessarily bad, but I don't see why it wrong to use one you already have.

Just because something can be overdone doesn't mean it's wrong to do it at all.
