I know I commented already, but your posting really just gave me a bit of hope for the human race. For the past several years, I thought humanity had died. Your heart is in the right place. You actually don't need to worry so much about it, because it appears that you're the kind of person who will do the right thing and you'll know when you've crossed that bridge.
You find someone young who needs the same chances that were given to you.
You will not regret it. You will not miss it. I did the same to LinkedIn a couple of years ago, and just recently left FaceCrook and Twitter.
I was on LinkedIn for years. I quit a couple of years ago and have not regretted it one bit. I hasn't resulted in a single sale or new client for me. It's really for salesmen and headhunter and perhaps government officials, not technical people.

I've been doing my own thing since 2002. Haven't looked back to a time of being owned by others.
