I don't really get the hate; work is boring, if some tool can make it happen faster and with less effort I'm all for it. I don't hear the line cooks at McDonalds complaining that they have to use a semi-automated grill that beeps at them instead of an open fire.

After Netflix et. al. cancelled/didn't renew about a dozen shows I was either in the middle of watching, or really wanted to watch I ragequit and decided to funnel all my streaming service money into physical media.

A few years, lots of eBay auctions, and many bluray and DVD rips later, I've got my own expansive library that's just as convenient to watch but the no missed earnings targets can take away from me.

Next on my list is music. I've built a respectable digital library but I'd like to have that backed by CD's where possible. Vinyl is nice for my absolute favourite albums but it's not an everyday kind of listening experience IMO - bit hard to listen to my records while I'm going for a walk!

For anyone getting into physical media I would highly suggest;

- Buying secondhand. In a lot of cases this is the only option anyway, but you can get bulk lots of CD's, DVD's, and Blurays for about the same price as a month of Netflix or Spotify.

- Backing up your physical copies. An old PC with the appropriate DVD/Bluray drive is very cheap, easy to automate, and you get to have the best of both worlds.

One big caveat is that "older" formats like cassette, VHS, and vinyl are not as simple or cheap. But it's not impossible to obtain and back them up, it just takes a little more time and equipment.

Devil's advocate; why would I have made an API request if my employer has never used that service? Maybe that lack of interest on their part is why I'm trying to leave and get a job in a field that's of interest to me.

I fully support, including financially, this project. But I worry that it will become what Mastodon has become which is (IMO) a complicated, shrinking, Twitter alternative with HOA's running large parts of it.

I don't think I've ever seen the vintage camera market this inflated, stuff that would have been <$50-100 5 years ago is going for $400+ and that's if you can even find stock of it. Even film has skyrocketed in price, despite more of it being produced now than any other time in the last decade or two.

1EB with only 30k users, thats a wild TB-per-user ratio. My frame of reference; the largest storage platform I've ever worked on was a combined ~60PB (give or take) and that had hundreds of millions of users.

I was fully prepared for a list of image board and ogrish/liveleak related trauma but this was relatively wholesome.

To say the least... This one looks like something out of a horror movie.

We've had models that can generate realistic looking people and coherent text for a while now, if they're going to insist on using an AI generated image (for some reason) at least make it a good one. Or better yet just mock up a product image that shows off what you're actually selling.

Having one of the "creases" be exposed while the phone is "closed" makes me nervous. Traditionally folding screens have been exceptionally fragile especially in comparison to regular phone screens, having the most fragile part of one permanently exposed to the world doesn't seem like a wise move to me. Hopefully they have some new kind of panel that's tough enough to handle it.

On PC you have your choice of marketplaces so it's somewhat less of an issue. On console you're locked into just the one marketplace with digital-only consoles, so if Sony wants to charge $100 for a game then that's the price. Once you've paid the $100 it's also tied to your account which is not necessarily always guaranteed to exist or be accessible, and is non-transferable.

Whereas with a disk you can pay substantially less due to your choice of competitive retailers (in my region Space Marine 2 is $79 at some retailers or $109 from Sony), buy secondhand for older titles (most of my library is secondhand), and resell or trade-in games when you're finished with them. And of course it's not tied to an ephemeral account, so you will always have access to the titles you've purchased.

Also for my use case, my PS5 doubles as a Blu-Ray player which is worth a good $100-200 just by itself.

WooCommerce should be filling the role of viable self host alternative to Shopify, but it falls short.

WooCommerce itself is mostly fine as a backend, but the themes for it (including the built-in/free ones) are mostly awful. Ugly layouts, huge bloated payloads, and checkouts that look so unprofessional most people will think they're fraudulent.

There are good themes out there but you'll be paying decent money for them.

On the pricing scale of rent, typically thousands of dollars per month, $35 is relatively inconsequential in most cases.

RCS messages are also still going to show up in green bubbles as far as I know.

The Gen AI company they just acquired seems to be making their own model that, amongst other things, can generate coherent and heavily stylized text. For a platform that makes logos, branding, marketing material etc that seems like a natural fit.

Creating elements like that even with Canva's existing tools would generally require a graphic designer or someone with that skillset, or even worse - an agency. All of those options can be prohibitively expensive relative to the benefit they provide.

I can't wait to hear the fallout from their first PCI audit; "what the f** is a tamper proof bag?", "Key ceremony? No, sorry I'm not religious"

But seriously I wish them luck, and I sincerely hope they know what they're getting themselves into and are receiving good advice/support from SME's.

I just ran half a dozen identical searches on DDG and Bing, and yeah it looks like DDG is returning the same main results as Bing (if you ignore all the AI stuff at the top of Bing searches).

I'm a unionised engineer, albeit in Australia where unionising is simply a case of finding a union and joining it.

I genuinely can't think of use cases other than tax evasion, and 'discrete' purchases.

From a capacity planning perspective that's very useful information for sure.

I'm not really talking about the electricity we (global 'we') are generating right now, because we're still talking about curtailing our usage of it so it's obviously not enough. I'm talking more about electricity we could be generating in future so that demand is met - that should, and can be from clean sources like solar, nuclear, hydro, geothermal, wind etc.

Efficiency should be an implicit goal with everything, but that's only ever going to blunt the demand not stop it entirely. We still need massive growth in generation in the coming decades, or we have to accept that the pace of everything is going to slow down.

I've often wondered if we're focusing on the wrong things with lines of thinking like "does X use too much power?". It's not like our demand for electricity is ever going to be lower than it is right now, so trying to use less of it seems futile. We can generate immense quantities of electricity given enough time and money, we've obviously fallen well behind if electricity is considered a limiting factor.

Disclaimer; I'm not talking specifically about AI here, just production and consumption of electricity in all it's forms.

I don't believe those two things are equivalent, that isn't the purpose of an analogy.

That's ~43 minutes a day, or the approximate length of an episode of a TV show - it really isn't that much.
