This (tech) career has proven to be so disappointing, and it's all the stuff around the actual work. I love working on computers.

Started my career in the decade of offshoring and didn't think we'd have anything close to an "AI" taking our jobs before we potentially unionized or had a government that would protect its labor force from being replaced by literal robots.

2020-2022 felt like the usa tech ship was finally growing into something really great. All gone now.

When I worked in devops I always worried that my job was automating away other engineers, it definitely had a "when will this come for me" feeling, because it really was, now the dev and ops are both getting automated away.

This is my first time looking at HN in practically a year. Tech is just so uninteresting to me now. Nobody is hiring SDE/SWE/SREs except for the problem makers, like Anthropic, Meta, etc. Anthropic has pages and pages of $300k-$600k roles open right now. But do you go help the rest of your colleagues lose their jobs?

lol I absolutely do not want non digital goods nor pirating. Ever. It's 2025. I don't have a cdplayer, a tape player, a blue ray player, I don't even know what the most modern "blue ray" disc would be. I have $2k worth of vinyls that are just unique copies I display as art I'll never put in my record player, that's also never been used. I don't want to constantly worry about 60gb of mp3 files.

I deleted my facebook account about 10 years ago. Downloaded data, deleted. Not deactivated.

Nothing in my life made me ever want to go back except for when I got back into playing hockey, and all the hockey leagues use facebook to communicate a few months ago.

I made a new account, had to literally upload a picture of my face to pass verification.. and then a few days later I was immediately banned and couldn't use my account. I assume because they searched previous data and compared my face to find out I have a "deleted" (lol) account and matched me. I've assumed they'll only let me log in if i use my original 10 years ago deleted account.

Webhosting is one of the most scammy shitty industries. I worked in it for 15 years. Do not give that industry any sort of benefit of the doubt. There are good companies but there are a lot of not.

You should never look up potential domain names at the big registrars. Or most registrars. Or any registrars. They'll buy it out from under you if it generates enough attention. They know exactly how many people looked up $coolnewthang.xyz and they know the bidding offers. THEY have to register it for you.

Somebody at Godaddy probably did this before you thought of the domain in the past, which is why its in their network and rejecting bids. It knows the incoming bids. It's sitting on it until someone like you came along.

I use porkbun, no idea if they've stayed course in honesty but I believe so.

Also if you're looking at GoDaddy era webhosts, they all own most of the market. Bluehost, Hostgator (EIG), etc are all grouped with a ton of other webhosts for that low end $10 market.

So, stay away from those.

Registrars are a scam, too. And stupid tlds.

Not that it doesn't happen but I've worked in datacenters, including our favorite clouds, and cdn/video architecture for 15 years and have never seen servers replaced on any cadence that wasn't us losing a customer and me sticking a quad core xeon under my desk.

These are $10k-100k+ servers. My multitenant/offload capable NICs are usually $10k-25k themselves.

I don't know the minutia and I'm thankfully nowhere near the webhosting industry any longer but Wordpress dominated my life for almost 20 years- I'm pretty sure it can be summed up with "WPEngine is taking all of our enterprise/etc business and I'm mad.." And he's trying to get rid of the opensource (he dropped their monthly dedicated hours from I think 2k-4k to 45, just 45 hours) to funnel people to wordpress.com.

Which, honestly I really do get from his end money wise, because I have friends in that industry who are worth hundreds of millions today from lucky breaks, timing, etc. and I'm still a wee-engineer.

But he made those choices, he was always the CEO. I didn't start with the funding my rich friends had.

And WordPress can thank CPanel and the tens of thousands of customer support and sysadmins that supported millions of WordPress users at $9/mo for a decade and have never once interacted or known who Mullenweg is.

And they can thank mysql.. and apache.. and php..

Take your money and be happy.

I met some of the worst people (CEOs) working in webhosting. Some truly awful people became very rich.

Eh, I make tooling for a living. It sucks to have nobody using your tools even if they were fun to make. You spend months/years putting something out there that you think will really benefit a company/team/foss and it goes nowhere. It's like painting a painting you love and it getting thrown in an attic.

I can't imagine getting an engineering job at an engineering company and asking them if I'd be allowed to create an opensource IDE that would never be a sold product. I can barely even get allowed time to write SRE tooling to improve our own engineers lives.

I feel bad that I feel this way but I really dislike them, but I can't believe those gamer chairs became the mainstream chair to see over the last few years. A few years ago they would get clowned, then it was less, and less, but it is cool that we're being more inclusive about chair themes.

I know it was twitch and them giving free chairs away to get more people to buy them. Great marketing.

I was 6-teens in hampton /vabeach (84), i didn't have friends IRL doing anything with computers ever as a kid. Computer stuff was considered super nerdy. Dad was army so he'd be gone for 2-4 years at a time and all I had to do was hockey and computer stuff (linux/games). IO had tons of car friends because of the bases.

They might have a family PC in the living room for research and papers but everyone used consoles.

In 2024 some of my genz friends have grown up doing their research/papers on their iphones. I could never. I get mad typing on mine, I need a keyboard and an ultrawide.

I was a kid in Virginia in the 80-90s and never got to do any of this stuff, but I was on irc and I saw people all over california and in college doing lan parties. Made me so jealous. My friends didn't have the internet until the 2000s and they used it for research and AIM.

It's crazy how regionally the internet spread across the USA absolutely massed from California.

If this is more about living in a more dense area where you have friends closeby, absolutely. I live in a very dense area and I have friends all over the neighborhood. Some across the street, some down the road. We can meet up and see a show or do friendsgiving or whatever or just grab a beer.

It's not cheap and I don't live in a big place but I am astronomically happier here than I was when I owned a house in the suburbs 2016-2019 and had to drive 25 minutes minimum to meet up with people.

This entire industry is something I feel like I understand 2% of and every time I make progress to get to 10% (3 months later) some massive change happens and all the terminology changes.

My big takeaway from this is that War Thunder is only 200 employees. I know this is a massive income generating game so I'm googling around..

It's 137,097,280 euros a year today. $131 million revenue with 200 employees.. I've worked at 1200-2500 employee companies that were 10ths of that, if that.

I have about 30 years as a linux eng, starting with openbsd and have spent a LOT of time with hardware building webhosts and CDNs until about 2020 where my last few roles have been 100% aws/gcloud/heroku.

I love building the cool edge network stuff with expensive bleeding edge hardware, smartnics, nvmeOF, etc but its infinitely more complicated and stressful than terraforming an AWS infra. Every cluster I set up I had to interact with multiple teams like networking, security, storage sometimes maintenance/electrical, etc. You've got some random tech you have to rely on across the country in one of your POPs with a blown server. Every single hardware infra person has had a NOC tech kick/unplug a server at least once if they've been in long enough.

And then when I get the hardware sometimes you have different people doing different parts of setup, like NOC does the boot, maybe boostraps the hardware with something that works over ssh before an agent is installed (ansible, etc), then your linux eng invokes their magic with a ton of bash or perl, then your k8s person sets up the k8s clusters with usually something like terraform/puppet/chef/salt probably calling helm charts. Then your monitoring person gets it into OTEL/grafana, etc. This all organically becomes more automated as time goes on, but I've seen it from a brand new infra where you've got no automation many times.

Now you're automating 90% of this via scripts and IAC, etc, but you're still doing a lot of tedious work.

You also have a much more difficult time hiring good engineers. The markets gone so heavily AWS (I'm no help) that its rare that I come across an ops resume that's ever touched hardware, especially not at the CDN distributed systems level.

So.. aws is the chill infra that stays online and you can basically rely on 99.99something%. Get some terraform blueprints going and your own developers can self serve. Don't need hardware or ops involved.

And none of this is even getting into supporting the clusters. Failing clusters. Dealing with maintenance, zero downtime kernel upgrades, rollbacks, yaddayadda.

I use them for a bunch of things on a bunch of different devices/OSes and one light frustration I've had is I've accidentally stored a few of them in different apps because I'll be on a different device and either not have access to an app that I usually put the key in (1pass) or I'll mistakingly hit a "save passkey" that Windows, or Chrome, or whatever pops up. I've had to go in a few times and change my devices.

I think this is because it's so new with these apps. 1password acts really strange with them sometimes and my chrome extension will lock up or not actually push the passkey through or whatever it does. Sometimes I just get annoyed and throw it wherever worked.

When they're flawless they're awesome. I don't mind the quirks right now.

I'd appreciate it if they let me block specific countries, etc from even attempting to log in. You can see the failure attempts somewhere in your user settings and I have them all day long from countries I'll never step foot in and quite a few adversarial.

I don't know how I convinced my parents to get me this in elementary but not a single other person I ever met had heard of it. I had no idea it had interesting tech, definitely didn't know it used satellites.

It was a really unreliable service, at least for me in Virginia. We had to call support all the time the short time I had it (1-3 months).

They built a very nice declarative CI/CD system before Github Actions existed. I think I was on Bamboo (and Jenkins) before going over to Gitlab and it was a breath of fresh air, a huge understatement. 2015ish.

Has anyone gone from absolutely hating cooking to enjoying it? I just don't enjoy the process of it. I've done cooking classes, blue apron sort of stuff, etc. I love eating good home cooked food but I've had partners who loved baking or cooking.

My pet theory is my ADHD turns what some people see as a therapeutic maybe meditative (as I've had someone put it) alone time in the kitchen to me hating standing still, waiting on things, etc.

But maybe I just haven't found something I enjoy cooking to get on that wavelength yet. Lately I've been digging up my favorite restaurant foods and trying to replicate them but I always lose out on some of the sauces that seem like a pain to make.

It's wild how greedy google has gotten with Pichai. Nearly all of my friends who worked on Kubernetes since 2014-2015 have left google with their RTO requirements since 2022-23 where they told everyone they could work remotely now they're actually checking attendance. Advertising over peoples paused videos now? I can't leave Youtube paused in one of my rooms and go to another room and use the internet without 1080p-4k advertisements stealing my bandwith when I'm specifically not using it?

My sister is a geologist who works at nuke plants (regulatory stuff, determing if they're in legal areas to build, ground contamination, etc). She always complains that it's an old-mans (this was in her 20s, 20 years ago) group of staff everywhere with guys who had incredibly light educations on what they're actually working on and had been in the business, and sometimes at the same plants, for decades. Some 40-50+ years.

We might have a severe lack of people who can work in the field at plants and tech getting involved is probably a good thing on making that field more prominent for new students than it currently is.

I haven't found a replacement yet, because it shut down after being bought a few months ago, but my team really enjoyed using Multi which is your run of the mill webcam/screenshare team app (like slack huddle) except it had rooms that stayed open and people could hop in and out.

We had a room for my team, and other teams, and we did a lot more "sit beside one another" type work/conversations with that.

If anyone knows another app with the rooms, and hopefully that lets multiple people screenshare at the same time please let me know.

Can something like this happen in the EU with its stronger worker protection laws? Can a company fire you after telling you that you're allowed to relocate then force you RTO?

I have an onlyfans and I constantly see people talking about this parasocial relationship thing and how people are managing accounts. Maybe for the big people but I know a lot of onlyfans models by way of working in the industry for 20 years. My first sysadmin job was for a porn company where I interacted with talent a lot. I don't know anyone amateur with social media management.

Anyway, a lot of people who have never used the site before think it's mostly what you said. It's not. The parasocial stuff is tiny unless you're doing specific kinks for people.

What I tell most people not familiar with the industry is that it's usually more like seeing someone in real life (NOT a porn star, celeb, etc, amateurs only) that you've got a crush on naked for only $10/mo. It has the amateur thing a lot of people love. Another reddit comment is always "Why pay when porn is free?" Have you never had a crush on someone? And amateur porn is probably the biggest "kink" I feel weird even calling it a kink, I'm practically on the "who doesnt like amateur porn??" end.

That's 90% of the customers. Lots of people who think a youtuber or instagram or whatever not professionally showing themselves off is just hot and want to see them naked.

I've never spoken to a single customer. I'm a straight man and most of mine are men and I have no interest or desperation for money to do para/kink stuff.

I really don't get why so many people think onlyfans is about messaging talent back and forth. It's kind of annoying to constantly read because it always comes from non-OF users who have this weird morality/ethics problem with sex work. It makes no sense if you know anything about porn. Most people jack off in silence and close their laptop and there aren't thousands of onlyfans models with media managers. Most are 18-25yo women who work corporate jobs or bartenders and have their own life to live. They treat it like youtube, upload content a few times a week and never look at messages.

Don't kink shame, stop with the "I don't know why anyone uses this instead of that, you're a loser if you pay for porn" thing. You like what you like, other people like what they like.
