At one point on the internet PayPal was the most trusted way to send and receive money - at least you are limiting sharing your personal payment information with random companies on the internet who may or may not be compliant. Lately though, with companies like Stripe and Plaid making it nearly frictionless to add payments to your website just as PP once did, and things like Google & Apple pay - why is there a need to use PayPal anymore? Their support is notoriously awful, the product is slow and dated, as a consumer at least I see no reason to not stop using PayPal (and their subsidies) entirely.

I've been building systems like what the OP is using since pgt3 came out.

Haha almost identical experience but self hosting immich with off site backups. Wild how difficult it is to change your email with certain websites! Several months later still fighting with various sites.

I have an iphone so I use Apple maps and an icloud based obsidian vault, and that is all that is tied to Apple which feels fine for now.

respectfully I think there’s too much magic here, simple use cases don’t have solutions jumping out at me

- I want to deploy my own things with argo alongside this cluster, how?

- I want a private nlb, even locked by a vpn subnet, how?

- I want to put this in an existing vpc, or peer with a vpc, or tgw with a vpc, how?

- I want to specify some RI’s for my nodes, how? I want to use spot, how?

- How do I upgrade each separate piece of the stack?

I could keep going but I hope the point is clear, I think this is too much of an oversimplification of a complex system. Better to just use MWAA or pay a devops team.

This is my take as well, we would not have any ip space if every machine had a public ipv4 address - this is kind of a silly argument to make, nat’s provide a ton of usefulness.

As a kid I didn’t get it either but would port forward, run a vpn server, reverse proxy, and so on. It was a good learning experience trying to get my friends to install vpn clients!

A great tool I’ve used countless times after learning about it while working at Rackspace a decade ago . It was great to learn about how it’s grown over the years, what an ordeal!

Cloudflare is at the top of the list of custodians I would want if in a similar position, glad it’s found a new steward.

Seems strange to trust your assets with a centralized entity, one of which that can turn you away for any reason when accessing your funds, that charges you for withdrawing at a different bank’s ATM. Further, an asset that has been insanely inflated over the past decade and suddenly raised in value by a central government through mandated interest rate hikes. Yikes!

I use gold, my gold is always worth the same amount of gold. No dumb fluctuation and I have no problem in finding people who will take it. One second to transact? My handing the gold to anyone I choose is instantaneous and can be done in private. Gold solves all these problems, anyone not using it must be naive.

assuming you trust the issuer (contract, in blockchain) there is a public and verifiable record of your ownership of an individual item

paired with signing messages to prove your blockchain identity, you can prove to others your identity and assets in your control

think if the contract was for movies from hbo, and by logging in you can view and download movies you own nfts of.. this is obviously not the case today, but may help highlight what the future may look like. you can of course think of and read about similar use cases for assets we ‘own’ today.

a lot of the push in blockchain is for decentralizing authority and democratizing access, where the above example is only solving the former

I stopped using lastpass a couple years ago now due to ill-communicated master password leaks, ever-rising fees, and buggy UX.

This seems par for the course, I can’t imagine any credible company or keen user actually using lastpass at this point.

As a whole I agree with your statement objectively, but this cannot be said for each blockchain uniformly.

We also don’t need the internet to communicate, gift cards are used to pay scammers, there are other much larger consumers of oil like cars and planes. It’s disingenuous to dismiss this technology for these reasons, there are definite upsides worth exploring that you have alluded to.

From the post it seems they did take that person seriously, and so worked to build confidence which is certainly a good thing to have. What do you propose to make this person more effective in meetings, rather than build confidence?

Not everyone in the meetings will be so understanding, either consciously or subconsciously.

I’m a home owner and this was by far the largest shock to owning a home. Good contractors are not busy looking for work, they are busy with a backlog. It was only after building personal relationships with the contractors that I could get reliable service.

Wishing you all the best for this to succeed, but from my perspective you should be trying to free up contractors to focus on work as much as you are trying to connect home owners with them. Contractors are certainly limited supply and high demand.
