Howdy, I'm Summer! I've been slinging code for over 15 years.

I'm currently focusing on mobile with React Native - I can build your app AND lead and mentor your team, too! If you need just plain React, I can do that, too!

What separates me from the competition is I bring a warm, friendly, and holistic approach to enterprise software design. I'm incredibly easy to talk to and gentle in whatever I do.

My job is to make your problems go away - let's chat! =D

Howdy, I'm Summer! I've been doing software development for over 14 years, and would love to help your team out with any React or React Native project! It's my wheelhouse.

* I write code like the big companies - and I enforce unit tests, CI/CD, and clean code. I can do all the setup, too!

* I have no problem coming up with deadlines and communicating with the business. As a fundamental rule, I am always transparent and honest about my work. Need me to break down tasks, assign them out, and play project manager? I can do that, too!

* I love mentoring and helping others. Any developers under my wing will learn everything I know. I've worked at IBM, multiple staffing firms, and other small shops so I've seen it all! I am a very kind and bubbly person, so any developer will always feel safe to ask me questions and learn.

* I'm a US Citizen living in Dallas, Texas

A fantastic tip we were given was to thrift all of our son's baby clothing, which we did. We have a rule to not spend more than $3.50 on any article of clothing, which served us well for the first 5 months.

Now, he's getting bigger, meaning those $3 dollar pjs now cost $9, as it's more cloth to create, but the sentiment is still there!

I try my best to shelter my brain from social media, but I am not perfect by any means.

I quit Facebook a decade ago, Twitter recently. Tried CoHost but no one is there and now dislike Tumblr's lack of multiple feeds, so I suppose I do miss a bit of "endless scrolling and seeing what cool people are up too", but honestly Discord + reading/mindfulness is starting to replace it. Slowly, anyway.

Reddit sometimes gives me a dope rush, but I need to knock that off, too. I try to read news headlines once a week to not get emotionally bogged down. It's all just noise in the end.

Still pay for Dropbox, still pay for Amazon Prime. Occasionally have CrunchyRoll/Disney+/HBO turned on for a few months before we cancel it after we mine the well dry or a show finishes up.

This is really the question to ask.

I'm due in less than two weeks, and I'm doing the "one and done" route. Costs, house space, time, and frankly, pregnancy wrecked me emotionally and physically. It's incredibly difficult to have a high-paced career (which I love and thrive on, to be clear!) ...when you are throwing up in the toliet constantly.

Yup, only one. One is enough.

I'm sorry to hear this. I've had the exact opposite of you - 35-40 hour weeks for 13+ years.

Yes, I've done OT, 2 AM deployments, 5 AM deployments, hours on holidays, etc etc - but I'd always take time off so I can recover, either from PTO or "free hours" approved by a good boss.

If I was even threatened with what you've been through, I'd put my two weeks in. Life is too short to work for free, on a fixed, 40-hour salary, for someone else. It's wage theft, plain and simple.

I have all of these on my shelf. Fantastic reads.

* Extreme Programming Explained by Kent Beck

* Clean Code and The Clean Coder by Robert C. Martin

* Soft Skills by John Sonmez (1st edition)

* Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas

* Working Effectively with Legacy Code by Michael Feathers

* The Mythical Man-Month by Frederick Brooks

(Selfish plug) Additionally, I wrote my own book concerning the entire industry, from just starting out to becoming a self employed consultant when you get sick of fulltime work - all soft skills from my decade or so of the industry, as well - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B43V1JJW

This is all great advice. I'd re-iterate on what your savings/PTO is. If you can take a month off, do it. Just do it.

Stay off the drugs for a bit to let your brain return to baseline. Exercise 3 days a week. Eat healthy. Sleep lots. Rest and recover.

It might be, but in my experience the hardest conversations are the best ones to have. If it all goes to hell, time to vote with your feet and dust off the resume, then.

If it's as bad as you say it is, collect evidence and prove Mythical Man-Month to them. Explain it's wasting more time AND money, and the deadline is missed regardless. Hopefully they'll listen.

In the nicest way possible, get those meetings canceled. Show initiative by simply saying "I will provide an update by the end of the week; let me do my research first."

If the skip-level is refusing to stay out of your lane and not let you do your job, it might be time to dust off the resume. Thankfully, the market is crazy hot for anyone not a junior. Still, that sounds bloody awful; I am sorry you are going through that. :/

And in the best way I can say this, but deadlines don't matter if they are not set by your engineers AND accounting for the time to add unit tests/integration tests/bug fixing/clean code. I've inherited plenty of salvage projects with terrible codebases that eventually get scrapped wholesale and redone from scratch - so if someone tells me to cut corners for bullshit deadlines, I'll push back with those stories and keep the course. Call me cushy/inflexible/unrealistic, but I refuse to write a salvage project of my own.

If there is not a strong team lead to push back and get those meetings canned, the only thing you can do is vote with your feet. Just a bad deal, sadly.

I truly love scrum when it's 7-minute standup meetings and then I get to run the rest of my day in peace. But as a team lead myself, I need those quick stand-up meetings so I can "pick up" if anyone is stuck. Many devs refuse to ask for help and it's my best way of "catching" them. ;)

I've been doing consulting as a self-employed dev for 3 years. Saved my sanity.

In those 3 years -

* I've had 4 clients (mostly happy!) - which is a TON more experience than most get in ten years (and future clients want that knowledge!)

* Wrote a book on software development (yay, resume item!)

* Took months off to recharge and sharpen my skills

I truly enjoy the path and can't see myself going back fulltime anytime soon. It is work, however, but more rewarding if you ask me.

You have to sell yourself, need a good network, and you need the right paperwork.

Always happy to chat about it - email is in my bio. I'm very bubbly and don't bite!

I wouldn't say it's just FE - many of my recruiter friends have this problem with ANY senior developer. It's low supply and low turnover.

Additionally, it could be your job posting not being enticing enough to get hits. I'm a senior FE dev and I saw some pretty bad job postings (hostile programming assessments, unpaid take home assignments, a circus of interviewing rounds). If you don't have your salary listed, that could be the issue too.

I can't speak for everyone here, but I'll take 2nd or 3rd best in compensation if the interviewing process isn't a 3-ring circus. ie, I will actively drop out to protect my time from bad interview pipelines.

My last two gigs were less than 2 hours of total conversation before a contract got signed, as an anecdote. Hell, I had one that was a 23 minute phonecall (it was awesome!). Some people just know how to hire someone after they look at a good LinkedIn or GitHub profile.

Just my 2 cents. As a selfish plug, you could talk to freelancers who have the expertise you need so stuff gets done in the meantime. It's not ideal, but at least you'd have the help...
