With Mach as the origins, everything other than tasks (processes) schedule and virtual mem was out of kernel and done over Mach port comms. Then xnu via next step and later OS X linked much more in kernel and exposed specific data types using com+ in iokit. And now more and more is moving back out of the kernel.

I’m not saying a lot of the comments aren’t without merit but I was actually surprised to see so much negativity. There are only a handful of funding approaches for languages. I would also say most of the funding they raised is going towards the platform and inference accelerator.
I can also buy the argument why setting up all the dev-tel infra to make an odd language project successful is a lot of work and possibly a distraction. Even though the source isn’t currently open, they’re certainly developing it in the open.
Maybe it’s a combination of a bunch of these things that’s throwing people off?

A dumbed down interpretation. What most people can buy off the shelf for servers more or less looks like a pc shoved into an odd looking case (1u, 3U rack). To get anywhere near the cost / performance of the big players you need something that’s designed for the data center server workloads.

I worked closely with Bob at Square through most of the 2010s. I keep coming to write something but nothing could do it justice... I just feel numb at this news.
So many of you have shared about how he impacted Java, Open Source, and being an engineer. I figured I could recount a couple more personal anecdotes.
1) I tried to keep up with Bob drink for drink one night... big mistake. We were at Strange Loop in St. Louis together (I believe 2013). On the Saturday, a bunch of us went out for drinks at a nearby dive bar. He was the life of the party as usual. I stopped at least 1 hr and 5 drinks shy of Bob. The next morning I woke up with the 3rd worst hangover I had ever had and he looked fresh as could be.
2) A bunch of Squares went to The Cafe (a Gay bar in the Castro) one night. He and his wife had put the girls to bed and called a sitter so they could come out with us. I vividly remember at one point in the night, we were hanging out by the bar area and I mentioned I was going to go down on the dance floor for a bit. "Down there?" he asks as he grabs me by the shoulder with a mild look a fear on his face. It was a pretty busy night. A gogo dancer stood over us, hips to eye level, on the covered pool table. "You don't want to go down theeeere!" implicit in his tone was a sense of worry that I'd be a piece of meat in the sea of people. His wife looked at me, shrugged, and we laughed

There is a bunch of well funded work to tackle validating various aspects of rust, the std library, and ecosystem. For example rust-belt led by Derek Dryer https://plv.mpi-sws.org/rustbelt/
The physical form factor of the “type C” connector is great but that a good example of how broken things are is that anyone can stick that type of connector on pretty much anything - might be usb 1, might just be power delivery, might be usb 3.2, might be real thunderbolt, might be thunderbolt-esque paie framed over usb 3.2 messages, this is before even getting into the wild world of hdmi 1.4 and display port over usb 3. This mess is assuming that the vendor implemented things correctly or is using a compliant controller chip, reality just gets even worse.
A simplistic interpretation:
Because the consortium wanted to get everyone on board, they allow pretty much any part of the spec to not be complied with. In theory there are various profiles the should be adopted but in practice that hasn’t happened.
What happens when I plug in a c-type plug? You just can’t say… and I mean you REALLY just can’t say. Will high power delivery and hdmi work (I’m looking at you broken Nintendo switch usb-c implementation), will you get thunderbolt packets wrapped over usb 3.2? Will you even get high speed? Is the cable active or passive? Will this cable give me high speed data? Will this >3ft cable give me high speed charging or just silently stay at 5v and ~1amp because the resistance on the middle pin is too high on that particular cable.
To placate many vendors who wanted to because to produce cheap crap and flood online stores, many parts of the spec do this all without active protocol handshaking and simply fail silently.
Long story short, if you want to do something off the beaten path, you need to get to know some of the faculty.
I also went to Waterloo but as a cs undergrad. I was also a student rep on the undergrad curriculum committee (this was all some years ago).
You’ll notice that all the non Math / CS major classes are completely different offerings. Non math majors can only take those “other” cs classes and likewise math majors can’t take them and must take the classes intended for CS students. Unless things have changed, very few faculty tech these non cs major CS classes (mostly sectional lecturers).
My overall impression (at the time) was that these classes weren’t that great. They mostly taught you to program (in Java) but exercises were grounded heavily in math problems but didn’t really teach math.
If you really want to get a good sense of “computer science” (the discipline) rather than just learn to program, I’d try and get to know the profs that teach 135 and see if you can get a specific override exception. You could possibly do the same for 136.
Going deeper down the cs course tree is a bit harder. Part of the challenge is the depth and pacing you want to offer majors doesn’t always align with the broader overview non majors are looking for. Eg you might want a single course covering algorithms and data structures rather than 3-4 courses and you might not care about the math involved to prove amortized costs.
If you want to go beyond 135/136 there are a few possible paths that come to mind and involve finding cross appointed faculty and seeing if they might sponsor you for an override into their class offering. If you’re in psych, the cog Sci route would get you to know people who are cross appointed with AI folks, arts used to have cross appointed faculty with the computer graphics lab (Craig Kaplan is a friendly face in the CGL). Physics obviously has overlap with the quantum computing lab. I don’t know any of current the undergrad ce advisors but J.P. Pretti might be able to point you in the right direction

This applies to every data structure that can be defined algebraically.
Is this a mutually true? I’d expect this to hold for inductive algebraic data types but not co-inductive types?
And when you leave aside Java (the language) and consider the jvm platform broader ecosystem with all the various interoperable languages like kotlin, scala, clojure… it’s a huge space.
I understand some level of heathy criticism but, I don’t really understand the level of hate the jvm gets.
When you look at recent and upcoming features, a lot of the complaints about it being “heavy” are being directly addressed.
